What a beautiful attraction. Located on a bluff above Old Village Ninilchik overlooking Cook Inlet and Ninilchik River & Harbor. Wow.
Definitely worthy of a stop on the way to Homer. The small church and cemetery are really picturesque. The dirt road off the main highway is a little bumpy, but the payoff is worth it to wander the grounds. Be sure to watch for the signs pointing the way so you do not miss the turnoff.
Please take a brief stop here on your way to Homer. I especially like the view from here of Old Ninilchik Village below.
We hit this spot on a gorgeous sunny day and it was so great. The buildings are still maintained by an active congregation but they are friendly and open you touring their church. I enjoyed immersing in the Russian history on the Kenai Peninsula. We saw this church on our way to Homer and was very happy we did.
You can see the village down below and across Cook Inlet to Mt Iliamna volcano. Gorgeous view. The church is small (we were not able to go in) and picturesque. The cemetery is mostly marked by white crosses and is hauntingly beautiful. There is also a tiny gift shop with cards, small icon pictures, and Russian style painted eggs.
This church is very tiny but adorable. I heard it's the most photographed church in Alaska. There is an old cemetery next to it. Definitely worth detouring and stopping by for a few minutes. The view from the bluff near the church is breathtaking, you can see all way across Cook Inlet and Ninilchik Village that's below. Consider stopping at the "Village Cache" store down in the Village for unique Alaskan native crafts, bone carvings, jewelry, etc.
As a still existing parish of the Russian Orthodox Church belonging to the Diocese of Alaska, the site is one of the most photographed locations on the Kenai Pensinsula and because of the historic building´s (built 1901) beautiful environment (including the cemetery!) a "must see" along Sterling Highway to Homer Spit. Stop by and pause for a moment.
