We loved skiing at Cascades and having lunch there. Everyone is so nice. It feels so down to earth which bigger centers lack. Price is reasonable and they have very interesting trails to ski on. Would definitely go back
Very friendly stuff. Not as expensive as other places. It's probably too small for a serious X-C skier, we did the big loop in less than 2 hours. But it is connected to the Olympic trails at Mt. Van Hoevenburg. The center has a very nice cafe with good and reasonably priced food.Very nice place for novice skiers! Most of the trails are in the woods, so it's not as cold even in cold and windy days.
Went cross-country skiing with my family during Presidents week. Cascades is a low-key, friendly, relaxed X-C center that connects to the Olympic trails at Mt. Van Hoevenburg. Cascades prices are much lower than the "professional" areas, and unless you're a competition skier you'll not miss the difference. The center has a very helpful and friendly staff, a pleasant (and quick) cafe/pub with good and decently priced food. Only drawback is the lack of double-tracks on the trails - when you meet someone has to step out of their track. Also the total length of the trails is a bit limited - we did most of the routes in little over 4 hours at a leisurely pace.
It was our first time cross country skiing. Place was nice, clean and staff helpful. Lodge was nice for a break and you can eat there. Trails well marked and everyone had a great time.
We had a blast! The15$ fee was worth every penny! We started snowshoeing about 730, on beautifully groomed and dimly lit trails. The lighting was perfect. It made the trail seem like the wilderness even though there were a quite a few people enjoying the night- snowshoes and cross country skiiers. There were two bon-fire/hotdog/keg areas. One even had a guitar player -tho I am not sure he came with the Center. After we went into the lounge and danced to a great band- in our long underwear - blending in with the girls in their tights :). I had a low sugar moment (crash) and the staff jumped right to helping me before I fainted. They were awesome!!! definitely will do this again!
We went up here a few weeks ago, very surprised as I had never been to any place like this before. It had a nice chalet for coming in afterwards for a few drinks at the bar and in front of the fireplace. The trails were groomed very well and were marked nicely. We were given a map when we paid and it was easy to read. Although there were many cars in the parking lot, the trails were not crowded at all, there are so many trails that we would go for long stretches without seeing a sole. I highly recommend this place and would ski here again if in the area.
Trails are breathtaking, great skiing for the beginner, staff is very friendly, food is very good and I loved the fireplace n the lodge. The Irish coffee was wonderful as well. Great day!
My wife and I were in town to enjoy some skiing and decided to come down to this place to try out Cross Country skiing. We were met by very friendly staff at the facilities and out instructor Teri was outstanding. I definitely recommend this place as great start to cross country skiing.
wonderful hiking, not easy but the view is one of the best I ever saw.Takes several hours. take water and snacks
The reason that I give this a 4 and not 5 stars is due to the fact that the golf course, which is included in the center, was not groomed at all and the attendant said she couldn't remember when the groomer had been there last. I thought it was odd to charge people to go there without having groomed the trails. BUT the trails at the cascade center were great, we went late in the season (also probably why the golf course was un-groomed) and there was plenty of options to ski for all ability levels.
We visited this past weekend for the Full Moon Party. We had great weather, and skiing through the moonlit woods at night was an awesome experience. The first bonfire was about a 15 minute ski away (we are slow) and the second one maybe 15 minutes past the first one. Both were extremely packed with what must have been hundreds of people. The keg at the second one was kicked before we got there. Free hot dogs for all. Maybe there were s'mores, but we didn't see them. Afterwards, we went inside to watch the band and I asked the bartender what she had for a cheap light beer. No taps, bottles, or menus were visible. She responded with a blank stare, followed by a pause, then barked "like a bud light!?" I said sure and that we wanted 2 of them, but she ran off before I could even finish my sentence. She returned with 1 beer and said it was $3. I explained that I didn't have cash (I would have said this before she went to get the beer if she hadn't abruptly left before I was finished), and that I actually wanted 2 beers. She b$tched me out about not having cash and walked away before I could increase my order or even explain myself. I should add that we paid for the Full Moon Party with a credit card, and there was a credit card machine sitting on the bar. Now, I completely understand the ripoff that is credit card fees, which is why I asked her what the credit card minimum was before she ran off while I was talking for the second time. If it was $10, I would have asked for a 3rd beer and made it $11 or $12 with the tip. I also tried to ask her if there was an ATM somewhere but she wouldn't even answer my question. I went to the front to ask the door guy if they had an ATM; he said no (he was at least nice about it), so we just left. I won't come back for the Full Moon Party after being treated so disrespectfully by the bartender.
Cascade Cross County Ski Touring Center provides everything that you need to go x-c skiing. They offer well-groomed trails, rentals, a ski shop where you can try the skis before you buy, a restaurant/bar and bunk rooms. They make the most of what snow they get and only open those trails that are appropriate. Their trails also connect with Mt. Van Hoevenburg and the Jack Rabbit Trail systems.
My husband goes to this place every time we are in Lake Placid. The staff is very helpful and friendly, it is very easy to get rentals. The trails are nice and fun to ride thru the forest. If there is not enough snow you could still ski on a golf course (we did it last year) :-) My only complain they open at 9am only. Why can't they open earlier? 7:30-8am perhaps? This way we'd have more freedom to plan the rest of our day...
This place is awesome!!! Trails are well groomed with adequate trail markings. When you are finished you can go into the restaurant/bar and have hot fresh home made soup and sandwich. We found "full moon" night to be even more fun with dancing.
In 2011 I went to the Cascade Cross Country Center for a moonlight snowshoe/xcountryski adventure. We started off just as twilight fell, and we traversed in the woods. The moonlight made it EXTREMELY easy to see. There were two large bonfire areas with kegs of beer, s'mores, and music. These two bonfire areas were *PACKED*-- it felt like hundreds of people were gathered here. It was very difficult to get a cup of beer (and no way were we able to get a s'more). Overall, my group of girlfriends had a BLAST! We loved the trail and the adventure...just wish it wasn't so crowded.
