The trail was not groomed for skiers when we used the first 1.5 miles of the Jack Rabbit trail (yellow) to reach the trail (red) to hike up McKenzie. The trail was mostly ice and packed snow.
More of a great walk than a hike, these trails are very accessible and walkable by anyone in good shoes. The splendid walk along the lake shore, the dam and the educational plaques are wonderful sites along the way. Very kid-friendly trails
It is a fairly easy trail to walk. Only about .7 miles. This was our one and only time we actually saw Lake Placid. We found that locals like to walk their dogs in the area, so be aware. We were greeted by a friendly, but exuberant wolf hound like dog. I think I lost a year or two off my life by the shock. Enjoy!
Th Jackrabbit Trail can be accessed at several points from Lake Placid and is fun anytime of year other than black fly season in the Spring. If you are a visitor go to the visitor's bureau near a Mirror Lake or go online to get a copy of the map. There are some very pretty parts of this trail which is wide and well maintained. What is amazing is that from downtown you can be off in the woods in a matter of minutes and enjoying a nice walk in the woods. Especially pretty in the fall. In the winter when there is adequate snow cover many cross country ski the trail.
Quite a long trail, many miles. Nothing too difficult. Trail does run through the valley, so if snow is limited it may not be the best place to ski at that time. Van Hovenberg XC ski area does a great job with limited snow. They have many groomers.
Great short hike that leads to the shores of Lake Placid. Too icy for cross country skiing today, but likely would be beautiful skiing in the right conditions. Perfect for children or adults just looking for a leisurely and scenic walk.
Very scenic hiking. Good grades and well marked! Goes on forever but has many access points. Beautiful during foliage season!
This is an easy hike from the Howard Johnson's parking lot; north to the dam at the outlet to Lake Placid. Thirty minutes one way is plenty for most people.
We rode our mountain bikes on the trails around Craigwood golf course. Lots of varied terrain, hills to climb, made for a good workout. Would definitely do again.
This was around a 2 mile, reasonably flat and easy hike with nice views of Lake Placid. I'm a stickler for "payoff for the work" when it comes to hiking and Jack Rabbit Trail does not disappoint. Give it around 2 hours to drink in the great views every few hundred yards.
Mother in-law grew up in Lake Placid and always told us about this trail...it was so nice to explore...we went on the Lakeshore and Jackrabbit trail. The views are amazing on the water. The trails are actually called The Peninsula Nature Trails.
My daughter hiked this trail with the Kids Camp she was with through our resort (Whiteface Lodge). She loved it so much we went back the next day with the whole family. It's more of a walk than a hike. It was great for a family with young kids, like mine, as they get to explore. We saw a lot of people walking thier dogs on this trail too.
Although we usually like somehting more challenging, this is a great hike with young kids or in our case worn out from tough hikes the previous days. Nice views of Lake Placid, but remember to bring water proof shoes. The trail is muddy in spots.
Easy to reach. An easy tromp with views of the lake. It just so happened to start sowing (in May) which made it more fun.Good place to take your dog, too!
3,5 mi trail between Lake Placid and Keene, great in all seasons, good to sky, snowshoe or walk. Mostly shaded few views but pleasant and varied. Quite substantial elevation, wet in many spots.
