Must see it. And just try to sit on the bench inside the church yard watching the birds fly in the skies - it has aura in it!
The Bernadine Church was turned into a warehouse during the Soviet period. All of the wooden parts were removed- pews, altar, pictures were removed. The chapel which is used by the English community has been completely restored and is beautiful and gives an idea of what the church once looked like. The main chapel still shows the results of the Soviet period.
From around 10.00 tours are conducted for small groups from Tuesday to Saturday. No fee, but your offerings will support the church. The tour takes you behind the main altar, the friars choir, the underground crypt (req good legs!) and more. The personal service from a well-speaking English guide did not pass unnoticed.
The Gothic Bernardine church with its monastery attached, dates back to the early 16th C. Located on the eastern perimeter of the city, it originally formed part of the defensive wall. Today it sits beside St Anne's church. It opens at 7am and makes a great start point for a tour of the city. Inside is has been undergoing restoration for the past few years. There are 14 altars in the church and the country's oldest crucifix. Old photographs show how it looked before the Soviets took over. Tours are available which explore the grounds of the monastery behind.
Nicely renovated, the history covers every wall and ceiling. To be visited with a guide to understand fully the meaning of all details ( from the side crypts to the altar). My girlfriend and I, we baptised our daughter on a sunday beginning of August and we were pleased with the service of the priests. The ceremony was quiet and in a smaller crypt. It became with the years a special place.
Very popular wedding place .. usually on Saturday's. very old and amazingly built church.. it has a nice history and even nicer story about Napoleon and his ideas for this church. Definitely worth a visit preferably with a guide ( Vilnius Free tour passes through there)
Want to see a real Vilnius wedding? It's on conveiorbelts, and this certainly a place to experience it. Come on Saturdays. Otherwise, the interior of the church is interesting, but not crucial to your Vilnius visit, keeping the city's massive number of old churches in mind.
Very nice, old and still rest-orated church. You can see there old frescoes from Renaissance period.
Nice architecture, worth to see with guide. Have very interesting story.
One of the "must to visit" places in Vilnius - come, see, try to talked with the brothers -it'll be unforgetable, especially if there will be no rush.
The Bernardine Church was a nice visit offering a mix of Baroque and Gothic design, set on the eastern side of the city centre near the park, leading to the Hill of Crosses. We enjoyed this somewhat quirky church but not as much as St. Anne's next door, which offered a more beautiful Gothic exterior. We still recommend stepping into this church and combining a quick visit to both Bernardine Church and the Church of St. Anne next door. These were nice stops during our day of church viewing in Vilnius.
