The statue of Herman is gigantic. The funny thing is that you do not see it when you enter and then suddenly there is the statue of perhaps more than 150 feet; impressive. There is also a kind of outdoor playground (kletterpark). Unfortunately the restaurants are all tourist trapps.
Nothing to dislike. A remarkable statue in great countryside. There was a small shop & a couple of eating establishments on site.
If you are going to Detmold, you must visit Hermannsdenkmal, it's a beautiful and historical place. The view from there is amazing!Take a time to walk around in the Teutoburger Forest, is great!
A good place to stop while hiking through the Teutoburger Wald. Great views from the location, whether you pay to go up into the monument or just take in the area from the foot of the construction.
Huge monument at top of hill within forest. 3 euros charge to climb to the top but well worth it for the viewsPay on exit car park and few shops and rwestaurants available.
A windy road - take care - to reach it. A fee paying car park, plus a fee to enter the attraction too.Worth the visit - although a bit of a hike if you have difficulty walking or it is a rainy day.Nice meals available closeby for decent prices. Clean toilets!
We visited Hermann the German years ago and went back to see him again recently and they have really improved all the cafes and felicities that are around him. Good parking, toilets and places to have a cuppa. Lovely walks up to see the statue and would recommend this attraction.
This attraction is interesting from several perspectives, not the least of which is that it dominates the landscape for miles around. It was built to honor the German warrior Varus, who died fighting the Romans in the Teutoberger forest. Unfortunately, despite earlier belief that the monument was built on the site of the battle, we now know that the site was selected by the artist for its commanding view, not to mark a battle site. And the warrior is NOT named Hermann, a corruption of the word for "leader." This site is a must visit for the area. Admission to the grounds is free of charge, but climbing the monument itself costs 3 Euros. There is a small building on the path to the monument that provides lots of history on Varus and the sculptor who fashioned the monument. Tip: If also visiting the nearby Externstierne, you can get a combo ticket for 4.5 Euros to allow you to climb to the top of both landmarks.

The drive from Detmold up to the Hermann is via a road that snakes through the forest. The views from the Hermann are excellent however there is a charge to climb it. As they were expecting bad weather parts of the area had been closed so I would recommend visiting in the summer. There is a restaurant and souvenir shops however as I visited during the Christmas period these were closed.
It is a statue on a hill with great views if you pay a few Euros to climb it, but there is a lot of history in play here. Starting with the Germans defeat of the Ran Army way back when, you then find that history being stolen by the 2nd German Empire as a symbol of nationhood, and then unsurprisingly by the Nazis a bit later. All that history and a nice walk, great views and a museum with some interesting photos, plus food aplenty. If you make it, a diversion into Detmold is definitely worth it for ice cream and to see a very attractive town with Opera House and parks etc.
Well, that's what it is! However, if you pay your 3 euro then you can climb to the base of the statue itself which gives a great panorama all around. It also helps you appreciate how lovely that part of the world is. There are two telescopes at this level for the use of customers. The monument is nicknamed 'Herman the German' and acknowledges the defeat of a Roman army in 9 A.D. by the consolidated Germanic tribes of that part of the world under Arminius. The statue is located in the Teutoburg Forest and there are many lovely walks in the area and a long distance path that the more intrepid might like to try.
A must if you are in Detmold. Go on a nice sunny day, if you can, the view is magnificent! Not available for wheelchairs, there is a loooong winding staircase inside. On certain days you can go up to the head-you have to book that in advance
A very impressive sight. afte a very nice drive in the country and up into the mountains we came accross Hermann. It is well worth the visit for the realy lovely walks and views. it.s free but if you want to go up the statue the fee is one euro 50 per adult.
hard to describe , i kept seeing Hermanns sword poking out from the forest top across from where i was staying ,even this didn't prepare me for the absolute size and wonder of this monument ,after a short walk from the car park (i believe two euros for parking) you walk into a wonderful peaceful atmosphere with different sights to see as you take your time to walk round and plaques to explain to you interesting objects then you suddenly have Hermann in view and it is huge . was quite a misty day when we went but this didn't spoil it at all.although not a clear view of him the sheer size was overwhelming and then a cat came out of the forest and sat beside me.loved it .
