My wife and I visited this museum not knowing much about it previously. We thought it would be a pleasant way to spend a few hours before heading off to the Nelson airport which is very close by. I wish we had been able to spend a lot more time there. There are two main sections of the museum, both amazing. The wearable art exhibit has a video presentation of the annual show held to select the best wearable art for the museum. If you can imagine a combination of Cirque de Soleil, brilliant dancing and fashion you might get a sense of how magnificent the wearable art show is. My wife practically had to drag me away from this exhibit. The classic car collection is a must-see for car enthusiasts. Practically every type of car is represented. Some of the standouts were cars from the 1920s and 1930s including a gold colored Cord Westchester sedan, a Packard Dietrich roadster, and a Cadillac dual cowled Phaeton. If you gave me the choice of visiting the Louvre or this museum, I'd choose this one.
The car collection is exceptionally good and surprisingly large. There is an impressive range of American cars as well as a British and locally produced cars.Worth a detour for the classic car enthusiast.
From it's static mannequins to rotating sushi train like display to the intimate AV auditorium, this is a little gem of a stop in Nelson.Highly recommended.Cars are ok (and I am a classic lover) it's the WOW that's worth the visit.
A little different but still worth a visit. Wearable arts is a bit small but the video at the end goes on for about 30 mins. The car museum has many classic cars and lots of american examples.
We did not expect it to be this good. Something for the men and the ladies. It makes you want to come back to Wellington to see the show.
If you are interested in classic cars, particularly American, do not miss this. The wearable art section is stunning
Do watch the video, it makes sense of the extraordinary dresses to see them worn and moving. And a prime collection of quality cars
If you have never seen a WOW show before then you show visit this Museum. However, please note that there are only a small sample of costumes on display - there are some static displays when you enter the 'costume area' and then I recommend you sit on seats or stand and watch the costumes as they come out on a travalator under lights for you. Once you leave this area there is only a room with video to view or exit to the Classic cars [which is fab].Leaving costumes we entered the Classic Car Musuem [NZ classic cars] but predominantly American [beautiful cars] - Pankards, cadillacs etc. All beautifully done up and displayed expertly.Thats it - and costs $24 per person - pricey but as we said 'we have now seen it but wont return' - only because it is too pricey for what it is in comparision to costs of other museums.Lovely cafe and staff in front of museum and good toilets.
Makes you want to get creative and make something, and to book a trip to Wellington to see the real performance. Stunning outfits presented in an interactive way with video and moving models. Will send go back as it changes every 6 months. Genius
Not sure of this is our best. Certainly very slick and well presented as a place. No reason to fault this. But .very costly we felt for what it was. And tricky car guy that likes very out there fashion and art, or car girl with man who isnan artist? People who love cars perhaps will find some very ordinary as we did.Hard mix we felt cutting edge art and fashion with cars! ? A very unique mix at a big price for entry we felt...Unfortunately we wanted it to be accessible/priced well not one on our list of places to reccomend to visit.
Even if you are not a fashion person this is amazingly creative! A must see, you will go away impressed and wanting to find the video somewhere to share with friends
A different place - vintage cars and wearable art.NZ$24 per person appears a bit pricy however if you like art and want to see a number of old US cars from the 1950's in particular then this is the place for you.Killed a few hours on a wet day.
Awesome to get up close to the items I saw in the show last year, and to see the incredible detail on the garments
You will see things here that most of us have not experienced....An interesting way to spend a few hours...but certainty not a must see.
Incredible display of wearable art and the classic car section enhanced by the art on display made from car materials.
