It was such a treat to meet the artist as we strolled through her gallery. Colorful, eclectic pieces, reasonably priced. Some of the pieces may be a little outrageous, but there is something for everyone. I especially liked the fact that the artisit's focus was frequently on women of all ages and stages. A memorable part of our visit to Cuba.
Martha came to greet us and she is very sweet. Her staff is exceptional. I loved her art and the sculptures placed in the plaza near her gallery.
She won the UNESCO prize for her depiction of women in art. If you go to the gallery when she is there you are in for a real treat-as she loves to discuss her work. Her staff is very knowledgeable, too. This is one place where, if you are an art lover, prepare to spend some time.
While I was chatting with and taking photos of the fellow that was a model for one of the life-size bronze sculptures in Plaza del Carmen, he explained that it was Martha Jimenez who had created those figures (and chosen him as a model) and he pointed to the building where her studio and gallery was located. She is a sculptor, painter, engraver, illustrator and ceramicist; she has won plenty of awards and her works have become part of many private collections all over the world. Indeed, her gallery had plenty of unique Cuban works of art, attesting to her multifaceted artistic talents.
Wonderful couple of hours: gracious and welcoming reception that included the service of beverages, a presentation highlighting artwork, photo session with artist, and opportunity to shop for affordable items.
we came across Martha's studio a bit by accident but were entranced with her paintings, especially her portrayal of women and women's place in cuban society. She is certainly worth a visit and if you are looking for a lovely memory piece from you time in cuba then this is the place to find one. Staff were very helpful in explaining the concepts behind some of her paintings and in helping pack purchases for travel.
Wonderful art work but very expensive !!!Nice to see the studio of a Cuban artist .Loved the bronze statues outside the original model the man reading a newspaper was in the square when we were there .
Martha was not there, but her daughter was able to give us some information about the paintings and how Martha relates her paintings to women/
The art work is incredible, there was one piece that I would have loved to take home with me but at 9000 CUC it's outside my price range. We really enjoyed the visiting the gallery there are a few prints that were closer to our price range. This is the first gallery we visited that had outside Cuba prices for art. Worth a visit but expect to pay prices you would see at home, not prices you would expect to see in Cuba.
I loved the gallery and bought a picture here. Some lovely ceramics - a real treasure trove. Many of her works celebrate women, including a fun female version of Brussel's 'mannequin pis' Outside are some statues of ordinary Cubans. The original model for the man on the bench reading his paper often joins his alter ego and poses for photos for a CUC or two. The group of women gossiping has an empty chair for you to join in the conversation. Even the bici taxis that took us there were decorated by Martha.
The old colonial building is furnished not only with the artwork of Matha Jimenez, but also lovely decorated with antiques and has a beautiful atrium. The artwork can be purchased there.
In a quiet plaza, a bit far from the noisy centre you can find this galeria full with nice sculpture, from a artist who is said that have done much for Camaguey restoration.
