We were very lucky to be taken to a ballet performance here. Town has one of the two top ballet companies in Cuba. It was an excellent production, made even more special in this grand old classic opera building.
This impressive building dates from 1850, but it was rebuilt in 1926 after a devastating fire and it is the home of the Camagüey Ballet. Unfortunately, the building was closed, yet last year (2013) we were lucky to briefly attend a very nice performance by young children and the audience was made up mostly of their parents.Fernando Alonso (1914-2013), the former husband of Alicia Alonso (1920- ), a Cuban prima ballerina, after divorcing his wife and leaving the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, directed the ballet in Camagüey until 1995.
To see a great ballet show, you must go here. Tickets can you buy 30 minutes before the show is starting.
Very impressive building needs to be fully restored .Shame we didn't have time to see a show and to be able to see inside .Maybe next time .
We went to the theatre to see a ballet. The play was in Spanish and our Spanish is very limited. We didn't get much of the words but the dancing was spectacular. We were so impressed that we went back to the same ballet, three nights in a row. World class ballet with full company of 40+ dancers, incredible costumes and dancing for 5 CUC a night. If we ever return to Camaguey, our first stop will be to see if anything is playing at the theatre, if there is anything playing we are going.
Teatro Principal is old, decaying and absolutely fantastic. It reeks of history and is home to one of the finest ballet companies in the world.
Did not expect to experience a really good ballet (Don Quichote) in Cuba, but the performance was amazing.
Teatro Principle CamagüeyLocated in the center of Camagüey, on Padre Valencia. The Teatro Principal was originally opened in 1850. In 1926, it was rebuild after major fire. That is why there are two dates on the facade. It was also used as a movie house. Now is is the home of the classic Camagüey Ballet,(1967) one of the two Cuban leading dance companies. Ballet Folklorico and Symphonic Orchestra also perform here. It is a venue for jazz, rock and even Enrico Caruso have sung there.I believe, there are tours offered during the day. The day, I visited, the gates were locked, but you could see the elegant marble staircase leading upstairs. The performances are advertised on a notice board up front. Not sure who is the sculptor of the female statue up front.
Niet een echt bijzonder theater. Het ligt een beetje uit het centrum.Niet echt een must.
Bellissimo.
