This cemetery is gorgeous to walk around. The gravestones are old and fascinating. The sculptures are beautiful and the grounds and trees are amazing.

The gorgeous landscape and the peaceful ambiance lend this site its contemplative wonder. I would urge a trip.

Incredible landscaping from the founder of modern American landscape design. Don't miss the pond and above it the Washington Tower, open from April through October

Mt. Auburn Cemetery is a gem, lovingly created and maintained, sure to charm anyone interested in nature, gardens, trees, beauty, landscaping, and history. The cemetery aspect is the least attractive in my opinion, but some of the monuments are interesting and/or beautiful. I like to visit Bucky Fuller's little marker, incised with an image of a geodesic dome and the words "Call me Trimtab." (A mystery for you to solve!) So yes, there are lots of interesting monuments and statues, but the living aspect is far more inspiring! It is a fantastic arboretum, with trees from all over the world, most of them labeled in case you are curious. It is a magnificent example of landscape design, many gorgeous views, brilliantly arranged and maintained. In May it is a mecca for birders, thousands coming from far afield for spring migration. Local birders haunt the place year-round. (Horned owls! Cedar waxwings! Hundreds of species.) The four ponds each have their own particular beauty. (My favorites: Spectacle Pond and The Dell.) The tower in the center is not to be missed: my favorite view of Boston, and lots of other things to see including close-ups of red tail hawks. This was built about the same time as Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris and Highgate Cemetery in London, which are well worth visiting, in part for the cultural comparisons with Mt. Auburn.

I love wandering through cemeteries and reading the inscriptions. I marvel at the detail achieved by the stone artists of years ago. They statues are so lifelike and it is surprising to see some of the impishness included in such solemn guardians. Mt. Auburn is a garden cemetery which makes for beautiful flora regardless of the season. My daughter and I went in August when flowering plants were less showy but the foliage was so many shades of green I did not miss the color. There were lots of paths to walk and many secret glades to find. I f I had one problem it was reading the map to find Longfellows grave but after happy wanderings we did find it. Wounderful way to spend an afternoon.

This is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the US and probably in the world. It's mainly the landscaping that makes it unique, but the variety of plant life is also outstanding. It's a great place to explore for natural beauty (cultivated, but never overdone or precious). Really great for nature photography (plants, animals and birds), and also for contemplative time.

Beautiful grounds full of historic graves, lovely landscaping, with hills and valleys, streams and ponds. View of Boston if the leaves have fallen. A great walk on a sunny day!

Find a beautiful Spring day, stop by the office for a map, and take a hike. Bring good shoes, even a picnic lunch. And discover the history of this classic American cemetery.

This is one of the most beautiful places in the Boston area to walk. It is perfectly well kept and has many beautiful sections. It is easy to park, tranquil, and relaxing. THere also are a lot of famous historic people buried there.

We saw a pair of great horned owls. Saw a painted turtle last summer. Interesting topography, lovely trees of all sorts, beautiful place to wander.

Well, you might not think of a cemetery as the first place that comes to mind for a beautiful outdoors experience in an urban setting, but Mount Auburn Cemetery will change that opinion in just one visit. For a first visit check it out near Lilac Sunday in May when most all of the flwoering shrubs are on full display. This is also one of the premiere birding locations within the entire state of Massachusetts

I grew up in Cambridge, and as a schoolboy went bird-watching in the cemetery. The extensive plantings encourage a variety of birds to stop over, and I am sure many nest in the cemetery as well. There are many interesting monuments and graves of famous and not-so-famous people to admire, and the landscaping is lovely. One note: bicycle riding is not permitted in the cemetery.

When I lived in this area I passed Mt. Auburn Cemetery hundreds of times and never visited. Now that I moved to the west coast, I can be a tourist when I come back to visit. Must say, you can come back here countless times and discover something different all the time. We took a stroll on the main areas and some of the many little "secret" spots spread throughout the place. We spend time looking at gravesite, the trees that still had leaves and the sheer beauty of the place. Went on top of the monument which has a total view of the Boston skyline. I can kick myself for not coming here when I lived here. I will make it a point to visit on my east coast jaunts.

Mt. Auburn Cemetery is a terrific place to walk in every season. Trees (many unusual) are varied, labeled and lovely, especially in spring. Monuments are interesting works of art. Ponds are pretty and peaceful. Climbing tower offers a great view. We're lucky to have this gem of the Boston area.
