Beautiful stop to relax and see the views. Watch the boats going and coming and listen to the water.
Here is a state beach and park that is by the harbor which has a revonlutionary fort with canons. Plenty of free parking. A place to relaxe by the water and take in the salt air and view .
Nice place for views and scenic walk. Not much remaining of the original Fort but there are cannonsand re-enactors on hand with a wealth of knowledge about the area during the American Revolution and the part the Fort played in the Civil War. While there walk out on the hurricane barrier and watch the boats . Great place to spend some quiet time.
A great place to spend the day with a picnic, good book, a swim, or whatever you like. Bring a chair or blanket and relax!
the most interesting part of this place is the remains of a Revolutionary fort which guarded the harbor
A great place for a long walk. Nice views of Buzzards Bay and the New Bedford hurricane barrier. The beach is very rocky but the water is clean and the facilities are good.
There are several plaques around Fort Phoenix or what remains of it as it is quite small that tell of its role in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. It commands a view of the Fairhaven/New Bedford Harbor. The park has a small beach and picnic tables. You can take a short walk over the Fairhaven side of the Hurricane Barrier between Fairhaven and New Bedford.
With the first naval battle of the Revolutionary war and the British marching through during the War of 1812, this fort/beach has much importance. The beach itself has nice scenery and must visit the cannons. A walk out on the hurricane barrier gives great views of the town center, harbor, and bay.
First naval battle of the Revolution took place here - great spot for a history teacher, and history buff! Loved the views of the harbor, and hurricane wall, as well as Buzzard's Bay. The cannons are cool, and you can walk on the wall out to the gates where the ships come through. Stop there and get out of the car, people!
The views, air, history, scenes of boats and atmosphere is simply wonderful A place to sit or swim, enjoy your friends or peace of area...and simply enjoy. Many of us remember sun bathing near the fort and cannons and watching the ships going to and fro. A place where people met people, mothers strolled with their babies, kids had fun and teens grouped around their music while seniors sat and watched and enjoyed the sun and sea. .
While viewing photo's from the 1800's taken at Fort Pheonix I notice that the landscape is about the same now as it was way back then and my children play on the same rock ledges and grassy slopes as in the picutres. The Cannon's are still there and the view is so beautiful. You can walk on the dike, sit and watch the boats or walk to the other side of the area to let the kids play on the sandy play ground, beaches and bath house when summer's here. If you're lucky you might catch the settlers camping or a fight against the Red Coats with muskets. There are events like that scheduled throughout the summer.
Fort Phoenix is a nice place to sit on a bench & watch the fishing busts come & go. Nice to visit anytime, when it's not too cold. Take a walk on the dike, bring a basket ball or have a picnic! Enjoy
A favorite place of mine.Grew up there and have many fond memoires, don't know of a more beautiful place in my eyes.Hope to retire there soon, tired of the rat \race here in Rockland County.
There is history to be embraced at Fort Phoenix, right up there on the grassy hillside with the cannons. You used to be able to actually enter the fort down below but that's no longer possible. The area is very comfortable for strolling, picnicking (there are grilles) and kite-flying. There are bath facilities, a gazebo and a playground, tennis courts and a huge field available for Frisbee, softball, whatever you and the family like. The beach itself? Not so hot. It's New England. We have rocks. But it's FREE.Come walk on the hurricane barrier and watch people fish. But please don't litter. The locals do enough of that.
Ft. Phoenix has a great view, good swimming, a great history, and lots of boat going by. It is fun to walk the beach around the fort and walk out on the dike.
