We love the scenery and relaxing time we spend at the Refuge. We live close by and go often. We have seen gators and lot of birds, raccoons and squirrels! It is a great place to visit and wile away some time on the scenic walk or to just sit on the docks and fish. Easy access and so serene! And it is free!

When you need a place to just sit and relax this is the place to do it at. Go out on the dock and enjoy the view

I had the unique experience of watching this state park being built. It is beautiful property! A great place to camp!

Wear your hiking boats, this is not for the average stroll. The Holmes trail begins just north of Slidell. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled even on the long road (about a mile to 1 1/2 miles) to the trail. We spotted a mama bore with her saplings, a gray heron and several cranes on the side of the road. The trail is not manicured by any means so be wise and know your plants - stay away from the poison ivy which is prevalent thorough these woods. Perfect place to feel the piney woods of southern Louisiana, a mix of hard woods and water lovers too. We spotted several wild rabbits and huge spider webs as we wondered along. Take time and enjoy - cameras are a must with all the fowl that inhabits this area. We did not see one, but they do say bald eagles make this their home during the winter. I can see why, what a beautiful place.

One of the many government protected areas for nature. Hike the trails, canoe the river, bird watch, check out the abundant fauna. Note that hunting is allowed in some parts of this area in certain seasons.
