The State museum is a wonderful addition to the Cultural Center. The renovations showcase the State of West Virginia's history. Excellent venue to take children and friends. Took family members that moved away from WV 30 years ago to the museum. They enjoyed all aspects of the museum
go through the museum on the bottom floor you will be amazed it s the history of WV the little brass yearly signs on the floor were a classic touch -the designer did an awesome job and if you need souvenirs the shop is well stocked and don't miss the Mountain stage and trace your family history here too
If you like WV history this is definately worth a look. And visit the gift shop, everytrhing is made in WV by West Virginias and its hard to not buy something.
The cultural center is not to be missed. Chou will be amazed at the presentation, the artifacts, and the overall experience.
This is one of the most interesting museums in the state. Follows the history of WV thru the 21st century. Exhibits are outstanding and thousands of objects to pique your interests. Not to compare it to the Smithsonian but is similar in that you must go back and back to really take advantage of all it has to offer. I've actually been there 3 or 4 times and each time find pieces of exhibits I missed earlier..and they have recently upgraded some of their rooms so even more to see.Cannot recommend more that you take time to stroll through the exhibits and go back again to see what you have missed.
Have lived nearby for a long time and never went. I was missing out! This place is great! A must see if staying in Charleston. Left there and passed through the Capital and ran into the Governor. He let us take pictures with him. Great time!
Visited second time since the museum was remodeled a few years ago. It is a great place to learn WV history. So many things to do. Went with school group and the kids participated in a scavenger hunt. Great gift shop with lots of books. Excellent way to spend an afternoon. Closed on Sunday and Monday. FREE!
I was told for four years to go see the Cultural Center, I am so glad I finally went! The place is amazing a step back in time. Would be a great family outing for a rainy day you could spend hours there and still want to go back.
This place is awesome. I've been 3 times and still would go back. You can spend 8 hours and still miss things. It starts with pre-historic and goes to present. I can't encourage you more to go to this museum.
We went to learn about the history of WV and ended up seeing part of a Miss WV competition! Thought we were at the wrong place for a minute when we walked in and lots of heavily makeup-ed young girls in tiny dresses were all over lol nice facility, although if it is raining (like it was on our visit) be prepared to get wet walking to/from the parking area!
Modern, clean and informational presentation to West Virginia's history, culture, and effects on the development of the United States.
On our first visit to Charleston we make a point of stopping by the Cultural Center. We spent about 90 minutes reviewing the history of West Virginia dating back thousands of years. It wasn't long enough. If you go, try to set aside about three hours to get through all the exhibits... they're very educational and totally free. We didn't have the grandchildren with us but other families with kids seem to be enjoying themselves. Currently there are displays of handmade quilts that are very impressive.
I was absolutely impressed by the state museum that is housed at the Cultural Center. This was my first trip to WV, and having been to some other state capitols I wasn't sure what to expect but this was completely amazing. I was only able to spend about 2 hours which was not enough time for this very well laid out self tour. The quality of items, interpretive signage and variety of points in time really made a fine collection that West Virginian's should be very proud of. It's incredible that a few people during the late 1700's and early 1800's would have the notion to set aside items that would be of cultural significance - and they were right! I hope to get back some day to really explore again.
We went to Charleston for Mountain Stage (which was beyond wonderful btw) and loved the Center. It's an inviting, bright space. I would go to anything there.
Went to Mountain Stage concert on Sunday evening. Impressive venue, not a bad seat in the place. Bought tickets online (which I would suggest, they regularly sell out). Good temperature. Only disappointment was that one of the performers we went to see was unable to perform
