You have to be hard core into the Civil War to appreciate Camp Allegheny, scene of a smal battle in December 1861. But if you are, this will be an unforgettable experience. DRive the old S-P Turnpike up from Bartow and then out to US 250 to get the full flavor of this isolated and evocative spot, filled with original soldier hut sites and earthworks and not a thing to remind you of the 21st century
We recently took the back way to Camp Allegheny. That is to say, the road beside the "Travellers Repose" to the camp. The road starts out great but gets bad and can only be driven @ 10-15mph. If you choose to take this way, be prepared. The 8 mile journey feels like 40. Prior to getting there, we stopped @ a cemetery that had many civil war graves. Meticulously kept, it was an added bonus. Once we arrived, I was taken aback @ the stillness of the place. The quiet enveloped me and I began to picture what it must have been like back in the 1860's. Beautifully maintained. Only one sign is available to read for history, so I suggest a person do research on their own. When leaving, I suggest taking the road to Rt. 250... it is only 2 and 1/2 miles long and will get you out much faster.
