This is a 56,000 pound red oak carved in tribute to the Chickasaw Indians who inhabited the Paducah area until 1818. The use of this natural material over cold stone, is so fitting. The fact that it was sculpted by a Native American, Peter "Wolf" Toth, may have something to do with this choice. I think children would be in awe of this work not only because of the size of the sculpture, but also the feeling that the Indian seems to be coming out of the tree. Noble Park is adjacent to this monument.

Jessica D. was a student of mine over 30 years ago when she submitted the name Wacinton for the Indian carving at Paducah's Noble Park. She won. It is a very neat carving and sits prominently as you drive past the park on the way to Kentucky Oaks Mall.

This is only one of many wooden Native American statues. They are carved out of an old tree. Only one per state and this is Kentucky's. Located right in Noble Park, Paducah. The city of Paducah is taking great care of Wacinton. Come get your photo.

I have passed by this monument of early American history many times, located in Bob Noble Park. It is a master class example of wood carving (sculpture) and it is a wonderful accent to Paducah's rich history. A Must see!!!

We were excited to check this out and it ended up being a big tree. It's cool to look at, but I would not consider it an attraction.

I read about this statue on Trip Advisor and the pictures whet my appetite to see it with my own eyes. It was impressive to think that it was carved from a tree. My husband and I were traveling with my inlaws visiting from Rome, Italy. All in the group were pleased with this stop during our trip from Nashville to St Louis. Since we were in Paducah we drove downtown and walked the waterfront and ate dinner at Whalers Catch. All was worth the time and effort. If I were traveling this way again I would return to visit downtown Paducah. I probably would arrive earlier in the afternoon to see the National Quilt Museum and have a more in depth look at downtown. Sidenote: The drive to the statue is not scenic or beautiful but make the drive to see it anyway and then head downtown. Great free activity for families with kids and tourists looking for things to do off the beaten path on a road trip.

I have lived in the area for 8 years and continue to find new things to see and do all the time. Take the time to visit this area and learn some of the history. You won't be sorry.

This is a tree that was carved to look like a local Native American that was reputed to live in the area in the past. There is very little to see in person that you couldn't see in a photo.

The review before mine is very good, up to date and accurate. I can’t add much to that good review. This site is a few hundred feet to the right of the entrance to Nobel Park. Enter the park and park your car as it is a short walk to the sculpture.

The Wacinton sculpture was carved from a local Red Oak tree by Hungarian artist, Peter Toth, as part of his Whispering Giants series. He started in the early 70's and currently has 70-80 of these giant statues around the US, at least one in every state, though a few have been lost to time, the elements, and one to termites.Wacinton, meaning 'to have understanding' honors the Chickasaw Indians and was dedicated in 1985 in Kentucky to the city of Paducah, itself named after a Chickasaw chief. The sculpture is beautiful in its realization, its meaning, and its very source of construction, to take the form of a past and original people out of a tree that grew from the same soils. It sits at the front of Noble Park along one of the main thoroughfares of the small, but great town and is easily accessible. If you are in the town, it is easy to find and simple to stop and enjoy a close up visit. As you look at the statue, there is a parking lot off to the right accessible from the main road. Stop and visit.
