Check out Old Town, on the west side of the college square, but start your visit at the Welcome Center! These gals were especially friendly and helpful. And don't miss the weekly special events. I spent a bit of time with the senior gentlemen woodcarvers between 10:30-12 on Wednesday and loved it.Tell them what you're interested in and let them help match them - and then ask to suggest their favorites. Get to know local!
It was helpful to stop here and get a map. The lady working the counter explained the two main areas of workshops, how to tell if an artist is currently there working, and gave us a recommendation for lunch.
The welcome center has a very nice introductory documentary on Berea College, some interesting artwork, and information about each President of the college. It also have a wooden, spinning game that our children, ages 5 and 7, enjoyed.
They have nice clean restrooms, which is why I stopped in. However, I was surprised that they have many interesting items surrounding the history of the region. They is a greeter seated behind a counter when you walk in, and she asked me if I had any questions. She was pleasant without being overbearing or chatty. I was able to walk the rooms and look at the displays without being bothered. There are also a number of pamphlets and brochures about the area that were useful. I would stop here again.
We stopped here a couple times. I think the first person we talked with was not too knowledgeable. We stopped back a second time to arrange a college tour of the arts area and this young man was more helpful. We had asked where to find the Pinnacles both times.
If you're like us, sometimes you only have time for a quick stop in an area as your driving thru! I wanted to see a quick overview of some of the spectacular handcrafts from this area: this is not the place! Stop instead at The Kentucky Artisan Center right off of 75, we found perfect souvenirs in a few minutes for all of our family. The Berea Welcome center is appropriate if you have all day to explore the city.
A quick stop off of the expressway, we'll worth the stop, rest rooms , food available and tourist information . The gateway to the rest of Berea.
Lots of information available on the diversity of local attractions - handmade items, such as pottery, jewelry, funiture, crafts. Also can find information on local festivals, events, and places to eat and lodge.
if you would like some helpful information on the community, direction to a good place to eat, or to better understand the college and student life stop in and ask questions, get a tour of the campus, and find out some secret spots in berea to spend quality time.
Stop in here when arriving in Berea to get brochures and info. Personnel here were very friendly and knowledgeable.
Visit old town on first Friday of the month for party in the square by welcome center. Center provides local info in a historical building. Clean restrooms.
The staff was very helpful and informative. We did not stop by until our second day in town. That was a mistake,it should have been our first stop.
The Welcome Center alone is indeed a five, with great information and helpful staff, but the rating also is for the area in general. There are all sorts of great little shops and pubs and restaurants in this amazing little town. There are lots of festivals all year round, and the area also boasts a nice college. We found all sorts of little hand made trinkets that we didn't know we needed. The kiddos were entertained by the local artists and stores, and the food was fresh and tasty. And at the start of it all, is the Information and help you can find at the Welcome Center. On a side note, this was the destination for my parents honeymoon in 1968. They visited once previously, and decided this was where they wanted to spend their first few weeks of married life together.
There is always something happening in Berea and this is the place to learn more about how to get involved. The staff ask you about what you like to do and then tell you where to go to enjoy it. It is a great first stop for the new visitors to see what the town has to offer and it is a great stop for returning visitors to find out what's new and happening. Staff are knowledgeable polite and easy to talk too. Thank you give you ideas of what to see, where to go, how to get there, and especially where to park. It is my first stop every time I go.
We picked up some great brochures of artisan shops and the volunteer on duty was very informative about places to see and best times to go.
