The offerings of this small place are limited due to space, but still worth seeing, especially if they have a special exhibit. But the view of the ocean behind the museum is simply spectacular. Not to be missed.
nice permanent collection of Maine artists, always special exhibitions, small store, sculpture and plantings on grounds with nice view of water
This is an amazing place which you might not expect. The building is beautifully located with a view on the Cape and you can enjoy the grounds as well. It concentrates on artists who painted locally or used to summer in Maine and many of them are nationally recognized. It is a very tranquil place.
A great place to visit to see what the local area is like, just a nice place to go, you can see the atmosphere of the Cape area, easy parking
This wonderfully situated spot is the perfect size for a taste of culture during your beach vacation. The bulk of the collection focuses on American artists who summered at the Ogunquit art colony, but they also have revolving exhibits. We were lucky to catch the Wyeth show this summer. Go early as soon as they open or go late because the place gets pretty busy in season, especially on a rainy day, plenty of parking but an easy walk from the center of Ogunquit.
We always enjoy the museum when we stop in. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The grounds are wonderful. We really enjoyed the Wyeth exhibit,
This is a small regional museum, devoted to Maine artists, who founded and developed this part of coastal Maine into a vibrant art colony back in the early 20th Century. It is well-laid out, and very pleasant to walk around in (both inside and out). The art history of this part of Maine is fascinating, and includes all of the famous artists of the time like Henry Strater, Rockwell Kent, Robert Henri and Andrew Wyeth. Periodic special exhibitions complement the museum's permanent collection, which itself is rotated regularly.
Best little art museum in Maine. Love the shows, the gift shop where I get all my postcards. View from back window of the ocean is another plus.
It is a very small intimate museum right on the ocean. Lovely outdoor sculptures. Nice american art. Great little gift shop with unusual pieces.
We made a point of visiting because of the special show of Andrew Wyeth work owned by Linda Bean. It was interesting but I was expecting more after seeing exhibitions of his work elsewhere. We were unable to really view and appreciate the outside gardens and sculptures due to the incoming nor'easter. The ocean though was providing some great "sea art".
Impressive exhibits. Truly enjoyed watching students from a nearby school as they lay on the floor, drawing/sketching/interpreting what the paintings and sculptures meant to them.
We have been here many times. The building itself and the grounds are worth the visit. The gardens are magnificent. The art collection is Maine-centric, as it should be.
Beautiful View, Beautiful Grounds, Beautiful Art. Small but wonderful. Saw the Andrew Wyeth Exhibit...brilliant. A perfect afternoon.
Being members of the museum, this trip we were treated to an entertaining exhibit of Wyeth paintings, multi-generational, that Linda Bean had acquired over a number of years. We found it to be a terrific chronological collection that frankly we haven't been privy to. Brilliant collections are available at this museum every year we travel here.
I really enjoyed spending time here. It is small but the grounds and ocean views are gorgeous and worth the price of admission which, by the way, is $10. No one visiting Ogunquit should have a problem with paying the $10 admission. I am fairly certain I paid more than that for a coffee and pastry. I don't "get" art and reluctantly confess to taking a "pass" on museums in other towns, but I loved this place! Even if art is not your thing, this is a place to visit while in Ogunquit.
