The huts are more like lodges - - - great food, great hospitality, beautiful and comfortable dining, and relaxing areas. Hut staff were very accommodating to meet our dietary needs. Bunk rooms, bathrooms, and showers all more than adequate and very clean. We were part of large group of 19 doing the 5 day tour together. Trails are well-maintained and the luggage service was a big plus too! A special shout out to Steph, Jesse and Nate at Flagstaff!
Great food, fun staff, clean, warm, welcoming facilities. We skied in with 24 people, 9 were kids from 7-14 and it was fabulous. Highly recommended for families!
We just returned from nights and 3 days of skiing hut to hut and have nothing but good things to say about the Maine huts. Beautiful, well designed huts, nice trails, great food, and friendly staff. Nothing like coming in from a day of skiing to a warm fire and a cold beer.
I've stayed at the Maine Huts & Trails several times over the past few years and have had great experiences each time. To be able to have as full as day as you wish outside topped off with a very comfortable lodge, delicious food, a glass of wine, cozy places to read or play games, and interesting guests and hosts to talk with is quite the luxury. The hut staff tend to be interesting and engaging and determined to provide a good experience to guests. The ski conditions were great and the trails lovely. Wide enough to ski side by side. The yurt - located halfway between Flagstaff and Poplar Stream was a welcome site and perfectly located to help motivate the younger skiers in the group. On a cold day, the yurt would be heaven. The bunks are well designed and comfortable, providing sufficient space for belongings. The drying rooms are a wonderful feature - dry gloves etc. are a great way to start the day. From a cost standpoint the huts are quite reasonable given that overnight accommodations include dinner, breakfast and a lunch that you can make and take with you. Additional lunch items such as soups are available for purchase. Highly recommended the Maine Huts & Trails for a nice adventure get-a-away any time. I am looking forward to exploring the area and huts in the summer and fall!
My husband and I just returned from a 2-night hut-to-hut ski trip to the Stratton Brook and Poplar Springs huts. The service, food (especially the food), and amenities were top notch! There were recreational activities (snowshoeing, sledding, nordic skiing); cozy relaxation by the fire, games, socializing, and a wonderful night's sleep after a day full of fresh air. Though the price may seem a little offputting, it is a nearly all-inclusive cost, other than tips for the hard-working hut caretakers and purchase of beer and wine at the huts, which is a really nice touch. Your fees also support a young but ambitious non-profit whose operating costs include a lot of the things that are not so easy to see: trail maintenance, the costs of building and operating the huts with primarily local materials and foods, and some pretty impressive sustainability initiatives. Most of these huts run off the grid, use incredibly efficient and clean composting toilet systems, water heaters and boilers, and embody a sustainability ethos in day to day operations. The huts are also a great stop for day trips! With hot lunch and drinks, baked goods and a warm fire, they make for a nice respite midway through a ski or hike.
I highly recommend the Maine Huts. This year was our second visit to cross-country ski and we’ve stayed at the Poplar, Grand Falls and Flagstaff Huts. The trails are beautiful: through quiet woods, along a lake and river, with views of the mountains. The huts are fairly new, warm and comfortable and the hospitality of the staff is great. We appreciated the delicious home-cooked meals after a long day of skiing. Included in the cost are a hot, filling breakfast and a packed lunch to take skiing with you that is plenty of food. Hot chocolate, coffee, tea and a good selection of beer and wine are available for purchase at the huts so no need to carry these in. After dinner, they offer a short eco tour of the huts, which I highly recommend; they have some state of the art systems and it’s fascinating to see how the huts operate off of the grid. One of the hut maps has an illustration in the upper-left-hand corner showing the elevation changes along the trail. We found this extremely helpful in preparing our trips. Doing an 11 to 13-mile ski is a good challenge and knowing when the hills were coming and what came after them makes a big difference. For those looking for a lighter amount of skiing or snowshoeing, you could stay at one hut and venture out and back during the day.Overall, we look forward to this every year and I highly recommend it.
My husband and I spent 4 nights on the Trail... First at Stratton, then on to Poplar, then 2 nights at the fabulous Flagstaff. All the hut staffers were great, but due to some unexpected issues, we were able to witness the Flagstaffers (John, Steph, Jesse, and Nate) handle themselves with exceptional professionalism, grace, and resourcefulness. Over the top helpful! Everything about the huts and the ski conditions was superb... cannot say enough about this wonderful association, which will have our support from here on. Another shout out to the phenomenal Darren Boivin, Facilities Manager, who went above and beyond the call of duty to help us with our flat tire issue(!) while handling all his other duties without a hiccup. Wow. We are so indebted to him and the others who were so understanding and helpful. We are already planning our next trip! Thanks to all the staff and may you all continue to live your dreams. My family, along with another, just spent 3 nights at the Flagstaff Hut, and had a great experience! The staff (Steph, Lucy, Jesse, John and Nate) were wonderful in all ways, from preparing meals to sharing experiences, from answering questions to giving advice. We chose to spend all our nights there, as we were hesitant about how well our kids would do taking on the effort of hut-to-hut, though we were worried about having enough to do, and trails to ski on, around the Flagstaff Hut. We feel that there certainly was enough to keep us occupied and relaxed during our time, though we probably would've been able to take on the trail to one of the other huts too. Bottom line is that I I strongly encourage others to visit Flagstaff Hut and support the Maine Hut and Trails system!
Family of novice skiers with adventurous spirit headed to Stratton Brook Hut from rt 27 in the cold. Arrived to a warm and cozy lodge with super friendly staff. The smell of the home cooked dinner filled the lodge. We played games and ordered beer and wine. Tour of eco-friendly engineering (solar, wood heat, composting etc.) was awesome.Loved it so much decided to head to Poplar Hut at breakfast the next day! 17 Miles round trip. Sore muscles but super hapy with the trip and our achievement! Highly recommend. Headed to Flagstaff and Great falls next!
My husband and I snowshoed into Flagstaff Hut this past weekend. We we were pleasantly surprised by this gem hidden deep in the Maine woods. The Maine Hut was a dream after a day of snowshoeing along the majestic lakeshore of Flagstaff Lake. When we returned the fire was going and the hut was cozy and warm. The food was fantastic. Everything is homemade!. The staff is incredibly friendly and willing to meet my every need. I really enjoyed Lucy, Stephanie, Jessie, Will and Nate. This is a must do adventure. XOXO to the stafff. Thanks for getting us away from the rat race to experience an adventure we won't forget. We will be back again in the summer for sure.
I have cross country skied into all of the Maine Huts and Trails lodgings. The groomed trails offer great classic or skate skiing into very remote and wild backcountry. It's remarkable that after a long ski you can retreat to a warm, comfortable hut, sit by the fire, have a hot shower, be served a large dinner and breakfast, buy beer and wine, and sleep in a bed. The next day you take off through the uninterrupted woods toward the next hut, enjoying views of whitewater rivers, large lakes, and mountain peaks. I haven't been there in the summer, but this would be a perfect place for hut to hut mountain biking. Friendliest place ever!
parked at the airport parking and skied up to Stratton, fabulous Eco lodge with great views of Sugarbush and the Bigelow range, next night in the Poplar Hut, and third night in the Flagstaff Hut. we paid for the gear shuttle between huts, so just had day packs. The trails were wide, wonderfully well groomed. The huts were comfortable, the food excellent, and the staff friendly and helpful. We had a great time and will return for the winter and other seasons .
Love Maine Huts & Trails! We had two nights at GF Hut. The staff (Sue and Sarah, then Zach and Kelly) was terrific. These folks are incredibly friendly and accommodating, and they really know what they're doing. Thanks, guys! The food was delicious and much of it was locally sourced. Like others, I would have liked a bit more--and earlier--grooming on the trails (we met the groomer about 5 miles into our trek out on the last morning). But on the whole, we couldn't have asked for a better time. We liked it so much we became Maine Huts members on the spot. Will definitely return, maybe by bike this summer!
I recently had a fantastic experience at the Flagstaff Lake Hut on the Maine Huts and Trails program and feel I must chime in. Great ski in and out, the trail was perfectly groomed -- we should have taken a longer trail from a different trailhead. Great admin, we arranged for a bag to be dropped off and brought to the Hut, everything went smoothly. Great staff, we enjoyed excellent cooking and company with the staff -- John, Nate, Stephanie, Jesse, and Lucy. The hut experience was a perfect mixture of quiet relaxation and lively socializing over reasonably priced beverages. Kudos to the organization for their eco friendly, off the grid heating and waste systems. Overall a rewarding experience to spend time outdoors and well worth the drive. The experience can easily be added on to downhill skiing at Sugarloaf or Saddleback. We will be going back.
Hey Dayle - We're glad to hear you had a great time (again) with us! I will make sure to pass that message along to the Flagstaff Hut crew. Thanks again and we look forward to having you back again! -Devin, Marketing & Merchandise Associate
