My husband and I met up with some friends in Ouray. We had planned on going 4x4ing but a couple of the friends had spent the entire previous day in a Jeep and were hoping for something different. The girls went for a horse ride and the boys took off in the car. I love 4x4ing, but I think we got the better end of the deal. The owner of the riding outfit, Fence Poste, is a HOOT! He's an authentic cowboy with an interesting background. He has one liners for everything which he fires off in his heavy western drawl. He was an outrageous flirt, but harmless and charming. The horses were easy-going and healthy, with well muscled legs from their twice-a-day climbs. The views were spectacular! It was like 4x4ing, but much quieter and less bumpy.I highly recommend taking the two hour trip.
My husband and I took an hour ride and let me tell you it was one of the best things I have ever done in my life! Mr. Post and the wrangler were fantastic and very friendly and welcoming. My husband and I didn't have an appointment and he fit us in without a problem. The trails were beautiful and the horses were very calm and taken care of. This is something great for couples, Families, and even going alone. Everyone on our trail ride was friendly and talkative. I can not wait to go back. And i highly recommend you give a try! You have not lived life until you go horse back riding in the mountains!
Very nice trails, horses, and wranglers! My teenage daughters had a blast and loved it. Fence Poste is so entertaining it's worth going just to talk to him.
Fantastic experience- first time riding with a western saddle, and with a real cowboy in the shape of Mr Fence Post, really good, well cared for horses, and very sure footed, which was just as well considering the height we were up and the width of the trail! A trip to remember!
We had a great time and Fence was a great host . We are horse owners and were on Vacation at Ouray and our friend wanted to ride , so we did , and it was very enjoyable . The horses are well taken care of and are great trail horses , but like I tell everyone always be on your guard and prepared even with trail horses .When coming back an idiot was off in the woods , but still not out of sight , relieving himself and jumped out of the woods which spooked several of our horses .Fence has them well trained and safe because we got them under control easily . Before this idiot popped out like a bear all of our horses had to pass by several hikers with dogs a barking and they totally ignored them but being in the mountains an a idiot pops out they are bound to spook ... I strongly recommend Fence and his stables ...
Mr Fence Post looks and talks just you would imagine a real cowboy would be. It was great to meet him and it was an honor to have my two daughters to go on their first horseback ride with him and his staff. They took our nervous kids on a great ride that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
There are several reasons why this is one of my family's favorite Ouray activities... First, you are riding a horse :) Second, this is a GREAT way to get awesome views of Ouray - we could see our house from atop the mountain that we looked at each morning while eating our breakfast outside. And last, but not least, Fence Post - the cowboy that guides you on your ride - is one hilarious character! When you call to set up the ride, he answers the phone with something like, "Hey, I'm old and ugly! How 'r you?" , And, as he is greeting you / getting you onto your horse, he is steady talking --- and everything he says is funny! He is not fond of the little "varmints" that eat whatever his horses don't (we call them Chippies --- he calls them "little s*I%s"..... btw - little PSA here: *WARNING - he does occasionally sprinkle in some curse words - fyi for those of you (like us) with young children that like to repeat things that they hear grown ups laughing at... but, nothing too offensive. We thoroughly enjoyed our ride / time with Mr. Post, and look forward to doing it again on our next trip to Ouray.
My husband and I took a 2 hour horseback ride with Fence Post. As previous reviewers have mentioned, he is quite a character ..but, makes the experience fun. Two wranglers accompanied our ride that included another family of 4. The horses were gentle and responsive. Riding in the mountains is very different then riding on flat lands, but the horses were very sure footed and the wranglers watched over their riders very carefully. The scenery was absolutely spectacular . We would definitely ride with Fence Post again
If Mr. F. Post is still guiding, just riding with him is an attraction. Mr. Post's first name is Post, because his folks said he was dumb as a . . . It just gets better from there! A fun time for everyone with this one-of-a kind character.
The tour guide, for the mine, gave a good presentation. What I did not like was the amount of people they insisted on packing in on each train car. When I knew we couldn't be packed in more tightly, they actually squeezed in two more people making the ride more than uncomfortable. The only reason I didn't give it a five was the trip into the mine located on the same property as the stable. The horseback ride was the highlight of our vacation. Our real cowboy led us on a beautiful ride. He was unhurried and he regaled us with cowboy stories and poems. They even have a small platform if you need assistance getting on the horse. My broken toe appreciated that.
This was my second year to ride with Post, and first year for my 7 yr old son. We are experienced riders and had a great time on the trail. Fencepost has a horse for every skill level and has a great sense of people, horses, and the match of each for the perfect ride.
My daughter, granddaughter and myself scheduled a 2 hour trail ride. The knowledgable guide took us up Gold Mountain on 130 year old trails, high above Ouray! The views were spectacular! Breath taking! The horses were easy to ride and obedient! I can't wait to do this again!
I've been on several ride and this one was the best by far! The wrangler was very nice and the horses were very good. We will definitely do this one again.
Spectacular views, nice horses & courteous wrangler - We are experienced riders & took a 2 hour trail ride with the wrangler, not Fence Post - forgive me for not remembering his name because Post called him everything but his name...Alfredo? but Post called him "Forito" and a few other affectionate names. We had very nice horses, safe tack & great conversation about the area, horses & the wrangler's upbringing in Mexico. It was very enjoyable. We booked the ride the night before since our planned itinerary had to be changed due to the wildfires - so we were very happy they were able to accommodate. Yes, Fence Post is a typical cowboy who is a little rough around the edges, but harmless. When we came back in - he asked questions of us & the wrangler to ensure we enjoyed our ride. You can tell he loves his animals & employees as both are treated very well. I would recommend more than an hour ride to really see the sights.
My husband and I decided to take a spur-of-the-moment trail ride. After a few mis-steps trying to get ahold of Fence Poste or Punchy, we got through to Fence Poste. When we arrived, we met Fence and Caity. Caity took us on our two-hour ride astride his mule, and he was friendly and very knowledgable about the area. Our steeds were Bluebell and Spring, and both seemed quite well cared-for. We were both inexperienced riders, but Caity and the horses knew what they were doing, so there was no problem. The path we took was beautiful and scenic.
