This is a great place to Mtn Bike or Hike. As you can see from the pictures this day I hiked and took photos. Rustler's Loop was loaded with flowers and is considered a beginner's mountain biking trail.
It was a great first ride on a great bike tour through Fruita and Moab. We got rare rains, which slightly limited the length of that day's ride, but made it much more adventurous.
This is one of my favorite rides locally. Take this trail out to Horsethief ... drop down ride it and come back out and finish Mary's.
Visiting a friend, we decided to run out and ride the Mary's loop. We went clockwise and started up a climb after a short decent. Classic desert rock climb. Short sections of gradual climbing followed by 2 to 4 inch rock steps, a little front wheel lift gets you over easily.Once you get to the Horsetheft cut off the trail gets more interesting, flowly rolling sections along the rim of a mesa. At one point you come a cross a "caution" sign and they mean it. There is a little tricky rocky drop with a bush on the left which hides the fact you right in the apex of a rock ledge which falls away some 20 or 30 feet just feet away from the trial. Miss the line up for the rock drop or tap the front brake could lead to one taking a big fall. From what I have heard this little section has claimed it share of damaged riders. The rest of the trail was to the dirt road return section was a fun mix of techincal riding between larger rocks with fun twisters shrt sections. Enjoy but, if this your first time keep en eye out for the one section I mentioned.
Mary's Loop can be ridden by itself or used as part of a day full of rides on Horsethief, Wrangler, Steve's, Mack, etc. You cant beat the views along the bluff's above the Colorado River. Spend a half or whole day out there and then head to the Hot Tomato cafe in Fruita for some grub n pub action!
Mary's Loop (and Horsethief Bench) were great rides for what I would call intermediate to advanced riders. There were great views of the Colorado River and the canyon. Some exposure and technical sections, but nothing too extreme.
we did Mary's loop as a warmup to Steve's loop and MORE Fun which were progressively harder. the views on Mary's loop were really cool especially after the trail cutoff for Horsethief Bench. The nice feature of Mary's Loop is most any rider can do the loop. It is a combo of double track and dirt road with some pretty cool rollers and not a lot of climbing.
A great ride into a well-mapped and marked trail system. Spend an hour or all day. Great views and any level of trail difficulty you want.
Why spend the extra hour plus in the car to travel west beyond the Zion curtain and into Moab? Better beer and wine and bike shops and people are extremely friendly. Enjoy the single track.
great access, fun varied ride with challenging trail...great views of Colorado River...It's March and it was 64 degrees...perfect riding wx.
Truly the best, although several riders aren't careful or experienced enough and get severely injured or dead every year.
Being an advanced beginner or beginning intermediate, I found Mary's Loop to be fun an challenging. There are some sections that I had to walk but was able to enjoy riding much of the trail. Beware of riding from mid-May through early September because the days can get extremely hot in this area. You also need to bring a lot of water for your ride. There is a parking lot and restroom facilities but no provisions for water. This is a single track with a little bit of dirt road riding at the beginning and then again at the end. The trail climbs and because of that offers great views of the Colorado river and the surrounding canyons and plateaus. Just a note of advice, the weekends can be very crowded with young, aggressive riders. You'll need to be aware of this because you'll be expected to get off the trail to let them pass. Not a problem most of the time but on some weekends it gets excessive. All in all, it's a trail worth riding.
I went to Fruita in February, and the riding was great. Mary's loop hasplentyof nice singletrack, but don't miss out on the Horsethief Bench or Steve'sLoop-- both are located right off Mary's Loop. There are spots where the singletrack leads only feet away from precipicesoverlooking the mighty Colorado river. The views are incredible. Not thebest trail for beginners, but I think that everyone will find something to enjoyhere.
