The Spud Drive-In was like traveling back in time when this type of theater was a typical summer past time. The snack bar had delicious, home-made burgers, fries, shakes and many other items that were savored as a guilty-pleasure indulgence. Friendly people next to our car generously lent us glass cleaner and paper towels to clean our windshield. Staying for a double-feature will keep you up until nearly 2 a.m., - a small price to pay for feeling young again!
Super fun evening to go hang out at the Spud, grab a burger, tots, and enjoy the cool summer evenings. Great place to load up the kids, go early to play on the grass and relax before the movie starts.
Nice photo op for kids or to send to grand kids. Right off the highway. Big potato on the back of a truck.
really enjoyed the ski movie and trick or treat this October... this place is frozen in time.. everything you would expect from a vintage drive in.... the grassy area is great for the kids in front of the screen, although I remember when they had swing sets and other things for the kids when they got bored... that would be a nice touch and cheap. The screen looks a little delapitated in the light, but it seemed to make no difference once the movie came on. the snack bar is really cool.. old record albums adore all the walls and ceilings.. while the wait for your food can be long if they are busy, the burgers and fries are very good.It would be cool if they showed an occasional older movie instead of new releases all summer... but I guess that's what keeps them open, I dunno.
We went as a family and totally enjoyed it. Everyone should experience this once.Good old fashion fun. Good food also.
We have been visiting the Spud for years. It is so much fun to pull in with your car or truck, pull out the sleeping bags for the kids - we park our wagon back-end first, open up the back and the kids watch the show lying in the back in their sleeping bags - and enjoy. The food is amazing if you love burgers and fries (there are veggie burgers too). The kids can run around on the grass while they wait for the movie to start - they just love it. This place is an institution and one of the few left in the country. We hope it is around for many more years!
You have to play the sound in your car on your car's battery. It drains the battery and you end up having to jump your car.
Fun to watch a movie and the food is AMAZING! If you have never been to a drive in it is a neat exsperience!
If you are interested in watching movies, while eating fantastic hamburgers, malts and carmel corn, in the comfort of your own car, this is the place to do it.
Saw the big tater on the side of the road and had to stop. Took several pictures. Wonder if the bullet holes in the truck were intentional or not.
If you are in Driggs or Victor, Idaho, you HAVE to stop at this place of American history! There are so few drive-ins left anymore, and this is one of the better ones. There's a little grassy play area below the screen that your kids can run-around or throw/kick a ball on before the movie. You can order some yummy spud-burgers, milkshakes, or whatever your heart fancies from their little restaurant at the back of the property. In our family, we get so excited for the summer because we know that when there's a kid movie out, we'll be seeing it at the spud! We throw some blankets, pillows, and goodies in the car and head out. I'm so glad our kids will have these memories of a drive-in to tell their kids about.
I loved it. I hate to see so many outdoor theaters closing, and it was really nice to see Idaho, Montana and Wyoming trying to keep theirs open. The community is doing a great job to keep this piece of history alive it seems.
A few years ago I read a short article about the Spud Drive-In in Driggs, ID. I have been eager to visit the Spud Drive-In for two reasons; (1) I have great memories of visiting Drive-In movies as a child. It was always a family affair and how could you not love watching movies like "The Absent Minded Professor" or "The Shaggy Dog". (2) According to the article I read, The Spud Drive-In, at over 6,000 ft. in elevation, is the highest Drive-In movie in the U.S. Since we live more than 700 miles from Driggs ID, we decided to plan a mini-vacation around our trip to the Spud Drive-In. In addition to the movie we visited the Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Spud Drive-In. In addition to watching a great movie (Ice Age 4) the food in the snack bar was very good. The setting was perfect and the experience was everything I thought it would be. Both of my kids (16 & 27 yrs. old) were with my wife and I and they enjoyed it as much as I did. With Drive-In Movies becoming a thing of the past, I strongly recommend visiting a Drive-In near you or do as we did and visit the Spud Drive-In in Driggs Idaho.
never seen a movie there, but had my picture taken many times...there is an old flat bed truck, with a huge, (size of the flat bed) fake potato on the back of it. gotta love it. great photo op.
We stayed in Driggs for a week and drove by the Spud daily on our way to jackson hole. Prior to our stay 2 people highly recommended the spud but when we looked into it we read that it had closed. Fortunately some locals rallied and were able to open it this summer after all. Wish we had been more proactive in our planning because we missed the child friendly movie by one day. Kids were really disappointed. Since a local had told me that the food was great we decided to get takeout on our last night in driggs. We weren't disappointed! Definitely recommend for a 50's diner style takeout. Loved the gladys burger, tots,&huckleberry shakes and kids did too. Cute decor. Bought caps and tshirts too. Only regret that we couldn't stay for the movie and that I never got a pic of the place.
