On a recent trip to SML, we ate lunch at the Mayberry Drive-in. Everything on the inside is as authentic as you could want, and the ice cream fountain immediately beckoned. But, we started with a normal lunch and there were many options. My partner had a philly steak and cheese with fries, very good, and I had a veggie plate with macncheese, green beans, stewed apples and cornbread. All just as I had hoped: beans cooked a long time with either ham or bacon in the pot; creamy but not too think macncheese, and lovely spiced apples. The cornbread was sweet but not too sweet and made me think that their homemade biscuits must also be very good. Funnily, just as I was thinking this, the people at the booth behind us were asking the waitress about the biscuits and they were just raving about them. I was so tempted to get some to go (they serve breakfast all day), but figured we would get back there one more time before leaving. Alas, we did not but should we get back to SML, I know we will eat here again.

We had dinner in the diner before the movie -- average food, average service, but it's hard to beat the convenience of having a diner situated right next to the drive-in movie. The drive-in was a pleasant surprise and it added a relaxing event to our vacation week at Smith Mountain Lake. As many others have said -- you get two movies for the price of one, but you'd have to stay pretty late to take advantage of the second movie (which we didn't do). We saw a first-run, family movie at the first show, which was a nice surprise. My only caution -- in spite of the "rules" posted by the drive-in's managers, they really don't practice what they preach, so you should be cautionary about where you park. Many people showed up with their SUV's and parked facing away from the movie screen so that they could pop open their rear hatch and use the interior of their car as alternate seating. Nice arrangement for THEM, but if you had parked in the row immediately behind them, their open rear hatch will inevitably block YOUR view of the screen. We mentioned this to both the driver of the SUV as well as the theater management -- nobody seemed to care. The management supposedly wants people with roof racks or other obstructions that will block other peoples' views to park at the rear or to the side of the parking area -- but most of the SUV's with their hatches opened were front & center the Friday night we were there. Nobody seemed to be aware (or care) that they were blocking other peoples' view of the movie. [buyer beware!]

Mayberry drive in theatre was a great place for me and my family to enjoy good food and up to date movies. We were also able to bring our 2 dogs, which made it even more pleasurable. The employees were very friendly and ready to please the customers. We will try to go at least once a month, because it was just that much fun.

Friendly staff, retro atmosphere, great food, and a fun way to watch a movie! Loved the deep fried oreos. Go to eat early on movie nights because the restaurant gets really busy. So glad we found this place.

A great place to watch a movie. The movie value is worth the drive. They usually have two decent movies for the price of one. Be prepared to stay late for the second one. Nice atmosphere. Food is OK. Pack your cooler and enjoy the outdoors.

We ate a light dinner their while watching a movie. I wish I had known about this place for breakfast. It was the same diner (Cosmo's) that was in Chesapeake, VA that I used to eat at all the time. I met the owner. He was very nice and personable. The staff was friendly and personable as well. It is a very nice place and I will come back next time I am in the SML area.We watched a double feature movie. The misty rain was annoying, but otherwise it was a very enjoyable experience. The first move was kid friendly. We got him to crash before the second R rated movie started. It was a very nice place and is definitely a hidden gem in the SML area.

If you love a great drive-in movie, the authentic diner adds to the experience. If you love an authentic country diner, the drive-in movie adds to the experience. If you love both, as I do, you have the perfect evening. And the movie was a double feature of first-run hits, both of which were on my must-see list.Drive-in: Great policy prevents larger SUV's, minivans, and even larger crossover vehicles from the front two rows. Each row is raised a bit in a hump fashion, enabling both theater-style viewing over anyone in front of you and an ability to angle your car upward or downward depending upon personal preference. There was no line to get into or out of the drive-in. I could wish the popcorn was a less salty, but otherwise a perfect movie experience.Diner: Everything you expect from an authentic country diner. I had a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. My wife had an open-faced turkey/gravy sandwich with pole beans. I should confess to my milkshake also - not exactly a health food experience, although the menu was quite extensive and included healthy options as well. None of the food items was the best I've ever had, but all items were first-rate quality, tasty, and satisfying. Overall a perfect diner experience.

A drive in theater is a throw back to childhood and a nice summer treat!! The movies at Mayberry are fairly current and the screen is BIG! Sit in your car or take your chair and sit outside of our vehicle...just be close enough to use your car radio as the speaker. Pack your own snacks or buy something to eat at the diner...just don't order something last minute; the diner gets busy!!

Mayberry Diner is a great example of the 50's diner. It's worth the trip just to see the place and examine the décor. And the drive-in is just so much fun. It allows us to give the grandkids a look back to our 'good ole days' when drive-in's were in every small town. We've seen several great family movies (wish there were more of them produced) and the kids have enjoyed seeing them as a late night outdoor fun time with the family. The location seems remote but it is on a direct route if you're also visiting Smith Mountain Lake State Park or the Moneta/Huddleston area of Bedford County. It's not even about the food really, but the fun nostalgic atmosphere and the drive-in movie experience make it worth your time.

The food is good. Nothing that I have to get back quickly to have again. Staff was good and very friendly. Atmosphere was excellent. Love any fifties type decor. They did a good job recreating that feel. This place is a little out in the sticks but you are in the lake area so most places are a little ways out. I would recommend that people try it at least once
