So glad you had the chance to come visit and that you enjoyed your tour! We hope you'll keep an eye on the events page of our website, where you'll find a huge variety of reasons to come back! Yes, we do have a lovely store with great gift ideas. It's a shame that we were closed during your visit and we hope you get a chance to stop back next time you're in the area. Thanks again!
Thank you!!! That is one of the best compliments we could receive! We strive to keep the house and the tour experience as authentic as possible and we love when guests tell us that they felt taken back in time. We appreciate your visit and your review, thanks again!
We've taken out of town visitors here several times. Each time, I enjoy the tour and learn something new myself. The guided tours are very thorough. You get a glimpse of both Mark Twain and his family, and the unique architectural features of the house. The newish visitor center has changing exhibits that are not limited to Mark Twain memorabilia, but feature artists of the time, artists inspired by Twain's writings, or exhibits highlighting Hartford. All very well curated. The gift shop has a variety of Victorian style items that always catch my eye.
Mark Twain located in Hartford is an interesting home that sheltered Twain and his family. The home is very large and helped generate the writing skills of the gifted man.
After living in Connecticut for 25 years, and in the greater Hartford area for more than 10 of those, I was embarrassed to say I had never been to the Mark Twain House, so when a Living Social deal popped up, a friend (who has lived in CT for 40 years) and I went. What a delight! We arrived about 1/2 hour before a tour was to start, so we went into the auditorium to view the Ken Burns documentary that runs throughout the day. I learned things about Mr. Clemens that I never knew (that he was born and died with Haley's Comet) as well as details of his life and family. There is also a lovely art exhibit in the main building that is worth seeing, featuring local artists (I particularly liked the pastel works by Rozanne Hauser). The house itself is very interesting, a wonderful glimpse into furnishings and finishings of that time. Well worth the price of admission.
I've had a chance to go to the MTH on numerous occasions. They offer a basic tour with knowledgeable guides who share the history of this amazing home and its creator. You learn much about the famed author who chose to live in this eclectic neighborhood. The on going restoration allows you to see something new with every visit. They also offer unique tours such a ghost tours, a Downton Abby tour and Christmas. The attached museum offers much for writers and historians alike. A place for authors to come and speak as well as other special events. They only draw back would be the fact that keeping true to house, it is not handicap accessible and has many stairs. The attached museum is accessible.
If you are a fan of his books or into history you have to visit this place. It's located in the Western side of Hartford on Farmington ave. Pretty cool stuff.
I knew almost nothing about Mark Twain other than his books. This tour told us his life story, which I found really interesting. I felt like I connected with his joys and his sorrows. His house is amazing, not opulent, but warm and inviting, the kind of place I would love to live in. He also sounds like the kind of person I wish I had known. Be sure to allow a little time before your tour to watch the video. I highly recommend going there.
We first went to the Mark Twain House and Harriet Beecher Stowe House and Center in order to entertain friends from abroad. We have been back happily a number of times. Each time we find the tours different because the guides are not programmed to give the same speech. They all have their own interests and lean that way during the tour. The visit examines not only Mark Twain's house but a fascinating reflection of Hartford, for some time the wealthiest city in America. Harriet Beecher Stowe living next door was no accident (and the differences and similarities between the homes are interesting in themselves). So while you're there you really should see both.It is not cheap. Adults are $18, Children $11 just for the Twain House. I can't remember what the combined 'deal' price for both locations is - and it's not given on the HBS website (!). Tickets are sold in the visitors' center and options are given between house and Stowe Center Tours. If you have the time and inclination, it's best to take it all in. You get a slightly larger bang for your buck but it does feel prohibitive to too many. At least parking is free.
The Mark Twain House is a beautiful Victorian home in the center of the city. The house is beautifully decorated and the museum offers great insight to Mark Twain as not only a great American Author, but also chronicles the variety of "business" adventures he pursued, some with disastrous financial results. With any museum tour, the guide is always crucial in providing a memorable experience for the visitor and I must say, each visit has provided excellent guidance from knowledgable tour guides. The Mark Twain house is a great was to spend a day.
Mark Twain had an incredible house built. everything is very ornate and victorian. It was interesting to learn about such a famous author that lived here in hartford for a good part of his life. Tour is about 30-40 minutes. Unfortunately i did not have the time to visit the museum. Twice a year they have a free day for hartford residents, which is when i went, otherwise it is a little pricey at $18. I hope to go for another visit sometime soon.
A ticket to the Mark Twain House is $18 for about a 20 minute tour. A lot depends on the tour guide. I have been there more than once and each time it was like a different tour. The house is beautiful and well restored to the original beauty. If you ask the right questions you will learn about the Tiffany tiles, the grandeur of a bathroom for every bed room, and the difference between a billiards room and a pool room. The accompanying building has a fabulous display of the history of the man and his inventions. The gift shop is great and has many unique items, I would not recommend for young children but the history is relevant for older teens. Be advised the house has a lot of stairs, do not attempt if you cannot climb.
Excellent historical attraction, must see when you're in Hartford. Excelente lugar histórico para visitar cuando este en Hartford.
Was recommended, we went and it was great. Nice gift shop too with decent gifts and book collection that served well for gifts for back home that were not "tacky" sort of tourism gifts.
Yes, it's a wonderfully restored great house that guides you right back to the era. You meet Mark Twain, the incredibly talented self-made man and writer; a failed investor; and peace thinker and activist. You'll also run into one of Tiffany's first stained glass pieces. There's also Harriet Beacher Stowe House tour packaged together. The guided tour was really informative. Thumbs-up recommended for people of all ages and interests!
