just a nice place to visit,in an area full of natural beauty, some great eateries and drinking holes, lots of places to stay as well
We took the Chain Ferry across the river. It may take 5 minutes to cross, but takes the operator a long time to start the voyage.
I didn't take the cruise, and I wish that I would. But let Me say what a great job that has been done, towards cleaning up the river in the past few years! the is a lot less debris floating in the water.
There is a great 2 hour cruise up the river and out to Lake Michigan. Compares favorably to cruises out of Naples Fl., out into the Gulf of Mexico.
We did a 7-mile, 3-hour kayak trip down the river. I've NEVER seen such a clean river. We took notice that we did not see one, single piece of debris in this river; not one pop bottle, not one gum wrapper......nothing! Very relaxing and quite beautiful. My husband said the only thing missing from the trip was his fishing pole! Would take this trip again in a heartbeat!
Worth doing. Get fabulous views of town from the river; see beautiful homes from the water perspective and then out onto lake michigan. Totally relaxing and there's a bar!
We came to Saugatuck for a few years without ever going out to the big lake by boat. The cruise down the Kalamazoo out to Lake Michigan is so beautiful and peaceful, you will love it. If you rent a pontoon, go beach it and hang out at the "basin" which is the opening in the river just before the channel. On some weekends in the summer you may even catch a band playing on another pontoon out there, its a blast.
It is a great place to go if you are adventurous. There were scenic views when you go kayaking. When you are done you can take a walk around a trail but it is nothing special. Do not go if you have younger kids because they will not enjoy it.
We were able to rent kayaks from Big Lake Outfitters in Saugatuck and really enjoyed our float down the river. They put us in upriver past Douglas and we floated back to the store. Saw lost of lovely homes, posh yachts and floated past a grounded tugboat that was a gull nesting site and saw baby gulls. A fun way to experience Saugatuck.
So many things to do on this river -- stay in a motel or a B & B with a great view, ride the river ferry all the way out to the mouth which ends at Lake Michigan, enjoy a meal on one of the restaurant decks, and watch the boats go by, ride the wonderful, old-fashioned Duck, or go over to the other, Douglas side of the river, and enjoy the public park -- feed the ducks at the bottom of the deck, enjoy a picnic lunch in the pavillion, and climb the tall steps on the dune to see the view of the town at the top. Then, run down the back side of the dune, but make sure you are wearing your bathing suit, because Oval Beach is at the bottom, and you can't be in town without a dip in Lake Michigan.
The water is not so poluted the west side of the Allegan Dam which is a great spot to put in. Fishing is popular (coho, steelhead) and people line up in droves near the Dam. Birding is good and paddling will likely let one see lots of turtles, herons (blue & green), sandpipers, an eagle or 5, cedar wax wings, kingfishers, swallows, geese, sandhill cranes, ducks and song birds (hard to spot in the forest, but songs are clear) and sometimes deer, and small mammals. The river current is slow so one can drift and take photos easily. In the spring the water is higher so pull outs are scarce except at regular landings. I wouldn't swim here.
Kazoo River used to be lovely to look at, but the drought has taken its toll. Water not fit to swim in. Fish not edible (PCBs). When the water is back up, a great place to kayak is to drop in at New Richmond and float to Douglas.
i went on a field trip three a while ago and it was awesome. there was room for picnicking and fun family games. the water was clean, fresh, and very fun to play and explore in overall i really liked it and i hope to got there again.
You can go fishing, canoeing, tubing, wading, This river is a clean, great place to do them all. My kids and I had a great time watching the fish swim by us.
Had one of the best times of my life, canoeing with someone very special along the beautiful banks of the Kalamazoo River
