We go on a lot of day trips and enjoy getting out and seeing things. Coronado Heights has been on our list of things to go see for some time and we were thankful to have finally gone. The view from on to is spectacular. Even on an overcast dreary day we could still see for miles. Our young kids really enjoyed climbing on the fort and looking around. There are lots of tables for picnics and the area is well kept. There was no trash and it is obvious that a signification amount of effort is silent maintaining it. After visiting, nearby Lindsborg has plenty to see and several places to eat.
Pretty cool place to see. Location is high up on a hill top and gives a great view of the town below. Not sure you are at the right place at first because the road winds around and around until leveling out. just as you make it to the top appears an old looking castle/fort. Once inside you will find stone tables, open space and you can go up on top too. But the stairs are narrow and steep so use caution. Bathrooms on site but porta-poty style and no water. My teenage kids thought it was a cool place. A must see if you are traveling along I-35.
Friends took us here so we could see the country-side & fly our kites. What a unique location and great views! Certainly changed my view of Kansas as seen from the Interstate. Many picnic tables offer different views, the pit toilet restrooms were very clean. The road is gravel and a bit rough, drive with care. We easily launched our Delta and Parafoil kites in a gentle breeze for a colorful fly. Recommend you visit the site if you are curious about Kansas off the beaten path. You can make a circuit and take the Prairie Trail roads for more scenic views of the country.
Our party of eight enjoyed visiting Coronado Heights. Allow an hour or so at this site. The building was a public works project during the 1930's. Design choice was excellent and invokes thoughts of Coronado and his time of exploration. The view is one of the best in the area.
So why someone would want to go there is that it is a very unique site that has a great view of Kansas, has a number of picnic tables to have lunch or a snack, has a few short trails around the hill, and is near an old cemetery (although I am not sure if that is open to the public).Would recommend making a picnic out of the trip when you visit Lindsborg. Must say that I am thoroughly confused what Bis54 was expecting.
Dusty, dry, dirty....sorry, but I'm not sure why anyone would make an effort to go there - no signage, no reason to make the effort.
I have been all over Kansas and this is one of my favorites. I am sure it is fun and beautiful at any time of day, but the sunsets are beautiful. Definitely fun for the entire family. A small "castle" for the kids to run around. Pack a picnic and don't miss this jewel!
Neat old castle. Kids loved exploring inside and out. Tables to have a picnic. 360 ° Views. Lots of history.
You will want to drive up the hill slow because it is narrow with low visibility. But once you get to the top, it is great! The "castle" is pretty cool. You can go inside of it and walk out onto the roof (watch your step, the stairs are fairly steep and uneven.)The views are wonderful. You can see for miles in every direction. There are picnic tables everywhere. While we were there, it was far too windy to enjoy eating, so keep an eye out for that before deciding to eat. Also, go to the restroom before visiting Coronado Heights!! There is a restroom, but it is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. It was no better than an outhouse and there is no toilet paper.
We drove up to Coronado Heights after a visit to nearby Lindsborg, KS. The building itself was gorgeous---looks almost like a castle on the top of a hill. There weren't a lot of people there, and even though it was a hot day, the constant breeze kept everyone cool. There are a lot of picnic areas on the side of the hill...had we known, it would have been a great place to enjoy a meal!
Great site for a picnic! Great view!Young families with children would really enjoy it! Lindsborg is a quaint little town and has something for the entire family!
We were in the area for other things and saw this on the hill. Pretty easy to find just making turns by instinct, a quaint old csatle atop a hill in the middle of nowhere, Kansas. You could wander around the ruins and climb the stone steps to the roof of the castle and it was all free. A fun little side stop on our journey.
Coronado Heights is a really neat place. You can hike around, have a picnic, climb to the top of the castle, and there is even a place inside for a larger group to sit and have a meal. It's a great place to take kids also.
It is so neat to me that these castle ruins are open to the public free of charge. The views from the hill that the castle is on are beautiful.
After shopping in Lindsborg all afternoon, my kids were bored so I took them out to Coronado Heights. The drive is fun because you can see the castle on a hill getting closer and closer as you drive through the flat land, and there is a winding road around the hill to get to the top. My kids had a blast climbing all over the castle and then running around all of the trails. There are also picnic tables up there, so it would be fun to take lunch up (but the bathrooms aren't that great, so go before the trip!). You could also grab a book and enjoy some peace and quiet while the kids run themselves out on the hilltop for free!
