I've been going to this site since the mid 1950s. It's been recently renovated. A must see for Civil War buffs.

We wanted to get out and do something so we went here. It was very interesting. (Self guided tours.)

The fort has a wonderful center with a great film on the fort's history. In between showings, the screen displays a video tour of the entire fort and it's environs. There are lots of period displays as well as a very nice gift shop. There has been a fort on this site since colonial times.

Great historic fort located in a state park that has wonderful beaches. This is a must when in the area. Adults and children alike will enjoy this.

Fort Macon has really changed over the past 45 years. I used to play on it as a child-overgrown with weeds and mosquito infested. Now it is a thriving educational venue with fun activities and things to see. You can spend a minimum of one hour touring the old fort and the exhibits. I like the gift shop when finished touring the fort as it has some unique gifts as well as the standard tourist fare. Family oriented. If elderly or disabled are not so inclinded to traverse the fort proper, there are exhibits and videos one can view while the others are out on the fort. Some portions of the fort proper will be inaccessible to handicap as it was built for soldiers not wheelchairs and walkers. I encourage those folks to visit the indoor airconditioned exhibits. You will not be sorry while you wait for others. In the summer they will have period re-enactments and cannon firings. Go to their website to get their schedule. You can walk out on the beach from the fort to sit and enjoy the water. I see fishing but NO SWIMMING. The waters are too devilish as this is where the sound and ocean meet. EXCELLENT FOR KITES (especially off season as there are hardly any people). Seems to always have air on the pointe out there. (see tip below). Not the greatest for shells. You can walk down the beach a fair bit from here and get to swimming and better shelling. The downside is the walk but the upside is there is almost always parking at the fort and it's free. TIP: Go back down Fort Macon Rd and through the main intersection - in the shopping center with the Food Lion there is an excellent kite shop with little one day for jr. or hundreds of dollars kites for the adults. Family owned Kites Unlimited and Bird Stuff etc. I believe is the name. They have a huge assortment of games, puzzles, flags, kites etc.

This is always a stop on our vacation! They have added a great tourist center with lots of history to review. The beach portion is also beautiful and we always walk out to see if we can find some sea shells. I would recommend this to everyone visiting this area!

It's a nice historic landmark in a great location and it's well maintained. In the end tho, it is just a fort. Me and my girlfriend visited Fort Macon a few times but I don't think we ever spent more than 45 minutes there. Combine it with a walk through the beautiful state park and a visit to the beach.

Great place to go. They are always improving it. Even young children like it. You can have a guide or visit at your ur own speed. Nice views of the coast from the fort.

There is a lot of information to take in, but unlike a lot of historical sites, this one is huge and can't really be damaged so letting the kids (ages 16, 14, 10, 6) wander while the parents read is a real luxury. It's "just" a fort, but they have time set up with maniquins and audio tracks to talk you through life in the forty over a 80+ year history. The younger kids like to wander and not be told "don't touch things" all the time. kids older ones even enjoyed learning and seeing the various displays. The visitor center was nice and even reasonably priced.

Fort Macon has something for everyone. Nature lovers will enjoy the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Shore as well as the nature trail. History buffs will enjoy the many different aspects of American History to include the Civil War, World War I, World War II, National Parks history, The Great Depression, and on and on. They had to kick us out at closing time.

This place was very impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my family. It has a nice indoor area and a gift shop that isn't completely filled with cheesy products. The volunteer staff were incredibly informative, even pointing us in the direction of a great place to eat (Rudder Duck, yes fellas, we went there). The fort itself was very interesting and a great way to spend an afternoon.

This renovated fort has gone through multiple uses during its 175 year existence and its use now as a museum is one that history buff should take advantage of. We took a side trip here from New Bern and spent about three hours on a ring afternoon. While it was kind of nasty outside, most of the things to see are inside and very well presented. Nearly every aspect of fort life was on display from multiple eras of use. The visitor's center is about 5 years old and very nicely done. Good gift shop with a wide selection of books of North Carolina regional interest as well as a good interactive display of both fort and beach related information. Lots of parking, easy access to the beach if you wish and NO entrance fee made this an outstanding attraction. There is something here for the entire family to enjoy.

Did my Wedding Photographs here and they came out amazing. It is a fun place to go to be outside and just "spend some time." Also fun for the kids!

This fort has gone through years of great renovations. A lot of great information about how soldiers lived back in the day. The cannon demonstration is always a crowd pleaser. Awesome views of the ocean and surrounding area.
