I've only been to SECCA once, and was surprised to find the building tucked away on the end of what seemed to be a neighborhood street. The exhibit that I saw was not exactly my cup of tea, but I'm glad I went to get a better idea of what the museum has to offer. There are a few open rooms with high ceilings where the art is displayed, and there's plenty of room to see the pieces, which is nice. I think admission is always free, and it's definitely a unique asset to Winston-Salem.

The museum is bigger and have more collections than expected. Very nice to stroll through the building and enjoy the art. Nice view toward the garden as well.

The House that Museum is in is nice with open rooms for viewing. SECCA is located in a modern building with very good open exhibit halls. Interest levels will depend on what is being offered for viewing. When we visited, the offering was not to our liking. More interesting was the Reynolds House nearby.

The rotating exhibits at SECCA are always exceptional. They are conceived with inspiration and executed flawlessly. For an even more thought provoking experience, be sure to take a guided tour. The museum isn't large...so take your time and enjoy.

I have been going to SECCA since I was a child. How fortunate I was to grow up in the "City of the Arts" - Winston-Salem - as I was exposed to this and other arts venues around the city and got a real appreciation for them. I try to go to each new exhibition, and although they are not as numerous as in past years, they are always good and thought-provoking. I'll echo another reviewer here by saying that many times I feel like this is my own private gallery, as they are not that many visitors, which is a real shame as this space reflects both the contemporary and the historic (the galleries are attached to the old Hanes home circa 1929, which has some rooms to explore, as well). Best of all, the price can't be beat - FREE!! If you are a visitor to the area, or a local who hasn't discovered this museum yet, I strongly encourage you to pay it a visit!

SECCA is a valuable resource for contemporary art in Winston-Salem. The exhibits change frequently, so there's always something new and different to see in a very intimate setting. Support the visual arts. SECCA is definitely someplace to visit over and over again.

Every year when we take my daughter to Wake Forest University and pick her up we stop at this wonderful art museum. The exhibits are always intriguing. They find innovative contemporary artists who otherwise we would never have seen. Love the natural setting, historical Hanes home and blend of new and classic. This museum is small enough that you can squeeze it into a busy day--feeling fulfilled and artistically inspired without taking a huge amount of time. Easy to find. Don't be confused as you drive through bland residential neighborhood--you will end up at a beautiful setting and visual treat!

The exhibits change over time and they have moved into electronic art and publishing, which is very interesting.

Very interesting paintings -- not to everyone's taste. The seating in the auditorium was excellent and the sound system and lighting was done well. We enjoyed the performance with no distraction from the technicals.

Up and coming artists mix with classics. In the old Hanes house. Free admission. Also showcases local artists. check the webpage.

SECCA has been around for over 50 years, but everything you encounter in exhibitions is new. Unlike most museums, even those for contemporary art, SECCA does not have a collection. Instead there are constantly changing exhibitions of contemporary art, no longer only from the Southeast, but from all over the world. As one of my friends once said, SECCA is where you go to see what's happening next.

My family was vacationing in Boone and wanted to find and intersting place to stop on the way to Durham and we picked SECCA. What a fortuitous decision that was! We have very different personalities but we all agreed that the exhibits were interesting and thought provoking. I only wish I lived closer so that I could experience more exhibits. Don't miss this one.

I'm amazed at the cutting edge shows at SECCA. We always stop when we pass though Winston Salem. This time the main show takes a look at our assumptions about paper, and one of the other shows is large glass slab-like sculptures.

I'm lucky to live withing half an hour of this art museum. I go frequently and rarely encounter anyone else visiting at the same time! It's like my own private art museum sometimes :) The traveling shows are top notch and almost always thought-provoking. This is a free museum, too. I recommend you go here and to the art gallery at Wake Forest U, then have lunch at Skippy's Hot Dogs (a must) in downtown Winston and then go to Greensboro to the Weatherspoon Art Museum for a full day's worth of art fix!

This was a great stop. The historic building is really interested by itself--it belonged to the Hanes family--but the gallery space is incredible. We were there while two separate shows were going on, and both were well-worth seeing. The girl at the front desk was friendly and informative. Considering this attraction is free, it's definitely worth visiting.
