What a surprise. This was a wonderful memorial to visit, particularly considering this relatively small town. Not only does it honor those veterans who died in every war from the Revolutionary Way, it also gives excellent insight into little known things about each war and it's specific impact on North Carolina. I am a licensed tour guide in Washington, DC and, honestly, I was very impressed with the quality of this memorial and the though and design put into it.
I walk through this memorial when I exercise at the park. It doesn't exactly blend in but it doesn't overly stand out either. It's sad to see how many have lost their life for war...this is not what God has intended for us.
Great place to spend the day picnic tables, nice restrooms and plenty of trails to walk. They offer a huge July 4th fireworks night, they also have a little kids park along with a park for the middle schoolers . Dogs are allowed on a leash, and you will find several dogs there and around the lake
The Memorial to WAR VETs is beautiful. The trail to run/walk is niceand very peaceful an oasis in the hustle and bustle of Garner
Great for family day, quiet picnic... Park has swings and slides for kids under 12. Bathroom is week kept and a nice view of lake benson available for the peaceful spring/ summer view
The Community raised the money for the memorial to honor the veterans killed in all the wars from Garner. There are columns with an easy to read history of each war with benches and bricks purchased by supporters honoring their relatives or friends who served from any war. The memorial is very open and classic. It is part of a larger park. Many locals who have lost loved ones in a war go there to reflect, pray and think. For a small memorial, it seems to be frequently visited and used. I have a house within walking distance and purchased several bricks for the six generations of my family that have served in the military including the Revolution. Garner is an old town and has at least one structure that still bears the bullet holes from a skirmish that occurred during the Civil War. They had a mill for which the local DAR chapter is named. It is definitely worth a stop - a great place to have a picnic.
Well designed memorial which invites you in and around to read the many names listed. A wonderful asset to the Park as a whole and easily seen from the road while driving by.
Located just 10 minutes or so south of Raleigh, the town of Garner features some stunning park spaces, all open to the public. The crown jewel of Garner's parks system is Lake Benson Park at 921 Buffaloe Road. Lake Benson Park, in addition to having paved walking/running trails, picnic shelters, playgrounds and wide open spaces, is home to a beautiful, striking Veteran's Memorial. Bring a picnic and spread your blanket under a tree, or reserve a shelter for a larger group (919-772-4688). Be sure to walk through the memorial, which has informative pylons dedicated to the veterans of each the wars fought by and for Americans. It is a moving lesson in American history and the sacrifices made for our freedom. There are benches placed throughout the memorial to sit and soak in the history. This park is free and open to the public (a small fee is charged for reserving picnic shelters). Lake Benson Park is family and dog-friendly.
