This is definitely not a winter attraction for what might seem obvious reasons since gardens are seasonal. But my disappointment stems from expectations created in the promotional brochure at our hotel. It leads one to believe this is a more extensive area than it actually is. it is very small, about the size of your back yard, and can be observed in it's totality without getting of your car. Granted, it is December, but the grounds seemed overgrown to me and conspicuous by it's absence was any kind of water feature; after all what is a Japanese garden without a fish pond? Fortunately, it only takes a minute to get there from the center of town if you are already in Newberry, so no big loss. But if you detour off the expressway just to see it, you would probably be upset.

Wells Japanese Garden, designed by architect W. Fullmer Wells and initially maintained by members of the Wells Family, is a park operated by City of Newberry Parks, Recreation and Tourism. The small, triangular garden features a temple, tea house, Torri Gate, Moon Bridge and ponds, all surrounded by trees and plants native to central South Carolina with a few non-native species added for variety. The garden was originally constructed in the back yard of the Wells family house. Look over the garden's fence for a view of the Wells house, which is ornamented in Japanese style. Parking is conveniently available across Lindsay Street. Restrooms are available down and across Lindsay Street at Newberry City Hall (during business hours). The park encourages relaxation and quiet reflection and provides a pleasant stop for travelers.

The Garden was made in the 1930s in a small South Carolina town and at first glance you may find it strange that a garden like this was made in this town. I, however, thoroughly enjoyed the visit. There are some oriental plants and vegetation that you otherwise wouldn't find in South Carolina, there is a Japanese tea house, and a small bridge. The highlight (besides the Japanese structures) had to have been the mini-pond (Coy pond??) which is still stocked with asian style fish, I saw bright orange-fire red fish and watched them swim under the bridge. This garden seems like the perfect place to pack a lunch or spend about 30 min for a quiet reflection. Enjoy!

This is a wonderful little park. Who would ever of thought you would find a Japanese garden in this little town. The structures are excellent representations of historical Japan. The Plants and property are well taken care of. This is a nice,relaxing place to sit and reflect. Have a drink at the tea house. while not big in size,tucked away on a side street, it still provides a nice experience.

Jardim japonês muito bonito e bem cuidado, como a maioria dos jardins americanos. É muito bom para você sentar, sem pensar em nada e só ficar apreciando. Muito bonito.
