Did the tour of the on a slant village. Would definitely recommend that over going it alone, and you get to go into an additional hut if you pay for the tour, and that allows you to see all kinds of additional, old artifacts.

I knew nothing about this before I visited but was very impressed. You can walk around the various lodges which are re-creations of a real village. Guides will give you more information or you can read up on it's history and explore for yourself. This is unlike anything I've experienced before and gave another picture to the Native American history in this area. There were actually several villages similar to this in this area. The story of their lives and demise is fascinating! If you are in this area - this is a must see!

We spent the first part of the day viewing the Custer house and soldiers barracks and then took the tour of the on a slant village. The village was authentic in representation of the original one.

We have visited before but our grandsons had not. It's a fascinating place but there were no tour guides available at the time we were there, we wandered around and the boys were quite impressed with the whole thing. Worth a trip.

This a great attraction to visit. There are guided tours available but we just walked freely through ourselves. It is an amazing recreation of what a village might have looked like back in the day.The attraction is free if you do not pay for a tour, but you do have to pay to enter the park.

We loved the village and the tour. The visitor center provides an excellent overview both of the village and of the fort. The constructed village provides a glimpse of what the area may have looked like when it had 100 earth lodges or more. The interior of one is furnished, giving an idea of life for the matriarch of each lodge and her family. The guide was excellent, providing myriad details about the site and exhibiting patience with the little ones on the tour. Worth the tour fee!

Definitely a must see - fascinating Native American history, spanning centuries. This village was already abandoned when the Lewis and Clark expedition came through in the early 1800s.

Our tour guide didnt feel into his job but we still enjoyed being able to look around at the amazing huts worth seeing

Lodges are equipped with genuine Native American artifacts. Interpreters will tour you through the site and answer your questions. In the Fall, Native Americans demonstrate ancient skills, and the past, renowned Indian flute player has come to tell stories along with his music in the huge ceremonial lodge. The lodges are reconstructions. Since I grew up in the area, the only thing I don't like is the freedom to walk around the village on my own. Having to be accompanied by an interpreter does help preserve the site, of course.

The inperpratve center had many fine dioramas. The guide was well informed. While the village was a recreation, the style and building methods were as close to the original as possible given modern realities.

We had no idea of the kind of people the Mandan Indians were but walked away a lot more educated. The village is quite interesting. Go up to the Infantry Blockhouse to get a different view of it - look down on the village. You can see the indentations of where other homes set.

Natives lived in that location, but they dwelled in earth lodges. I have no idea what that picture is portraying. Let's be clear that Gen. Custer kept them close, so as to keep an eye on them. He and his men also gave them the smallpox. Colonialism happened. Let's be real. I grew up in Mandan, and know the history of the area well. It's tough to see the more painful side of colonialism when you are simply acting as a tourist, because they do their best to make a hero out of Custer, when he was anything but.

I came here with my hubby on a Saturday, most of the Earth Lodges were closed, but we enjoyed the time we spent looking around the ones that were open.

Mr.White did an amazing job on our tour. We are so lucky that he showed up to give us a tour. We all learned so much more than we would have on a self guided tour.
