Is to hike a mile up the Boy Scout Trail from the trail head off Park Boulevard, a flat easy hike across Joshua tree habitat and then take the 2.25 mile spur to Willow Hole which is also flat and easy hiking. A short distance up the Willow Hole spur and you start to enter between ridges formed by the rocks and eventually end up walking up a wash between ridges as you near the end of the trail -- pretty much a total change in scenery, habitat and environment from the hike's first (and what will become its last) mile. Another aspect of this (6/7 mile) hike I appreciated was that on the hike out your vista is of the wonderland rock formations ahead but on the hike back your vista is off to the mountain ranges to the west and south -- a nice variety.
The Wonderland of Rocks is a backcountry area in the north central portion of Joshua Tree National Park that is a maze of rock and boulder piles. The area is excellent for rock climbing and sighting desert bighorn sheep but difficult to navigate and easy to get lost amongst the rock. There are no establish trails through this area but there are two very good trails that skirt the Wonderland, Barker Dam and the Boy Scout trails, and a campground, Indian Cove, along the north side that can give one a feeling for the area. Probably the easiest and best way to see a portion of the Wonderland for most visitors is by hiking the easy but excellent 1.3mi (2.1k) Barker Dam Trail.
