The Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery is adjacent to the Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum. Both are worthy of a visit when you're in the area. The fish hatchery is set in a beautiful location with a lovely view of Shasta and has been producing quality trout for the sport fisherperson for decades. Be sure to splurge and buy some of the pellets to feed the fish then watch these beautiful rainbows flash and jump to eat it! I especially liked the more natural fish runs that they use for some of their trout. Once you've had your fill of trout viewing then make your way into the museum. It has wonderful displays on local history and ecology. Both are a gem.
Fish hatcheries are a place I always feel conflicted but its a great spot to teach kids and maybe be able to ask some hatchery workers some questions. The best part about this place is the little museum right there on the property you can get a good feel for the history of Mt Shasta ca
Stopped here to check out this hatchery. Wonderful place for you to see very large fish and learn some interesting information on what they do with the fish and the eggs that they take from the fish.
The Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery is the oldest operating fish hatchery west of the Mississippi River. It has been owned by the State of California since 1888. This hatchery provides 80% of the trout to the state of California. It is fun seeing all sizes of the fish, from the smallest hatchlings (I think they're called "fry") to the large ones used for spawning. The hatchery is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and it's free! Everyone loves feeding the fish too. It only cost ten cents or twenty-five cents for food. It is in the beautiful Mount Shasta area, right next to the museum, just 1/2 mile off Interstate 5.
Fun place to wander around. take quarters so you can buy fish food out of the machine to feed the fish. The fish are all facing one direction and when you walk by the flop their tails at you. It's fun to feed the fish 1 pellet and a time and watch them eat. Big beautiful colorful fish.Museum is open from 1-4pm but you can access the ponds with the fish from 8am to dusk. There is a city park at the entrance, nice place for a picnic and relaxing under the treesDirections: From Interstate 5, take Central Mt. Shasta Exit, turn west 1/2 mile to stop sign. Cross North Old Stage Road to hatchery entrance. (Siskiyou County)http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fish/Hatcheries/MtShasta/
