Went on a May Springer trip with Fishing Oregon out of Gold Beach. Not a lot of good things to say about the experience. My friend hooked up with the only fish of the day (25lbs +) and the boat motor was running so poorly the guide had a hard time putting the boat in the proper position to fight the fish. The battle lasted for about twenty minutes and the guides assistant had two clear opportunities to boat the fish and just stood there looking and not reacting. Fish ended up hitting the boat and spitting the hook. After awhile Steve heard that fish were being landed a little up river but made no attempt to change spots. We sat in the same spot all day with no success and the guides main concern seemed to be keeping warm and not catching fish. The motor was running so poorly we had to return on the trolling motor. They commented they could now get the motor checked out after we payed them. Heck of a way to run a business. We both feel we should have been offered at least partial refund based on lack of effort.
My husband and I used Ron Jones' Southern Oregon Guide Service in October, 2008. He was recommended to us by the owner of the Rogue Forest B&B. We spent a day on the Rogue River fishing for salmon and steelhead with Ron. Even with rain falling almost the entire time, it was a great day of fishing. Ron is an expert fisherman, has a great boat and tackle; knows the best spots to fish; is an excellent coach for those who want to become better at the sport; and he's good company. He is based in Medford and guides on the Rogue, Chetco, Elk and Umpqua Rivers; his telephone number is [-]. When we go back to Oregon for more fishing, we'll call Ron.
