We spent three weeks in Indian Rocks Beach in February of 2015 and our rental was located a very short walk from the Indian Rocks Beach Preserve. Since I am an avid walker, I visited the Preserve at least once a day. The boardwalk which runs through the Preserve weaves its way through the beautiful tropical trees and shrubs. The boardwalk also runs along the Inter-coastal for a short distance where ospreys, pelicans and other sea birds can be seen fishing for their dinners. This is a nice place for children because they can run along the boardwalk and also observe fish, crabs, birds and snails in the ponds from the boardwalk. There is also rest rooms available, which is nice. I highly recommend a visit to the Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve.
I love this little park and walkway. You can take a walk through the mangroves to a lookout over the beautiful inter-coastal waterway. The park is also open after dark which is nice if you are like me and like to watch the sunset on the beach then go for a moonlit walk.
If you're looking for a large park with lot of amenities, you'll need to keep looking. Here at the Nature Preserve you'll find elevated walkways through marsh areas. The walkways go back further than you would initially think and eventually lead to the water. You won't find anything like a playground, beach access, concessions, sports courts, etc. But that's not what this is. This is a nature preserve. You'll also find a community garden which you don't see everyday. It's of average sized with plants in planters (as opposed to be planted right in the ground). This makes for a good place to take a walk. Children would probably get bored quickly.
