Outstanding collection of aircraft inside and out. Certainly comparable to the Smithsonian Air Museum at Dulles. Took docent tour of the main building and the tram tour around the outside. Both were excellent. Boneyard tour of the AirForce facility next door was sold out.
From the time we walked in till we departed it was an incredible adventure. Top notch all the way! As an aircraft and war buff I was like a kid in a candy store. The wife said she hadn't seen me excited like this in some time. Very clean with magnificently staged exhibits will entertain you for hours. Photo opportunities abound in this museum and I took hundreds. If you go remember the weather in Arizona can be hot in the summer. Keep that in mind if you plan to see the outside exhibits. There are tram tours but sign up early they fill up fast. Have fun we did!
Aviation and history buffs should plan on spending at least half a day here. Along with many, many vintage planes this museum has an Air Force One flown on by Kennedy and is also the home of the somewhat famous aircraft "bone yard" with hundreds of planes. I recommend, though, since much of this is outdoors that your time your visit outside of the summer months although there are plenty of indoor exhibits that may also be appreciated.
We had a great visit and learned so much about the history of aviation including Seaplanes and the Vietnam era helicopters. Great planes in the outdoor area as well - remember sunscreen and water for your exploration. The Flight Café was great with the best BBQ Pork I've had and a chicken quesadilla better than many I've had in table service restaurants. Definitely plan to stay for lunch! I loved getting pictures with two Blue Angels planes and they have a great MiG collection as well as Air Force 1.
Excellent collection of historic aircraft. Unfortunately we arrived too late for the tram and the Bone Yard tours, but there was plenty to see at the museum. We enjoyed the new women's exhibit. Nice to see our aviation history well cared for and available for people to see. The space exhibit was not quite as well done, but was interesting. Very helpful volunteers around the grounds to answer our questions. The gift shop was nice as well.
Wonderful museum.... Full of aviation history....Be sure to take one of the bus tours on the grounds of the museum, or sign up for the tour of the "Boneyard", which is located just north of the museum, where the government sends surplus aircraft for either storage or scrapping... If an aircraft is flying somewhere in the world, they have surplus parts and sell them to other governments... A good time to be had. Very informative and educational.
I had heard about this museum from a friend and decided to check it out. Amazing gem and surprised to find it in southern Arizona, but after hearing from one of the guides why it was there it made sense. This facility has a number of indoor exhibits in a few buildings. Exhibits range from real airplanes to various artifacts and historical displays. There are also a number of aircraft outside on the museum grounds you can see by either walking or taking the tram tour. I recommend the tram tour because the guide gives you some great information about a lot of the planes. Theses aren't just Air Force planes, all military branches are represented. One of the other tour options is the boneyard tour, you need to schedule a time when you arrive, they sell out early and run about every hour and a half. You get on a nice air conditioned bus and they take you inside the Air Force air base across from the museum. There has to be over a thousand airplanes/helicopters of various shapes and sizes. The driver points out a few and gives additional information about the boneyard. I still shake my head at the number and dollars tied up in those planes. There are separate charges for the tram tour and the boneyard tour. I would suggest getting in line for the museum by 8:30 ( the museum opens at 9) especially if you want to book an early boneyard tour. We were there about 9 and the first boneyard tour we could get on was 1:30. This was on a weekday. But even if you don't do the boneyard tour you will love this museum if you love aviation history. There is a restaurant and gift shop on the property, food was pretty decent.
The 390th Bomb Group Memorial was an interesting addition to the World War II museum information. If planes are what you like, check this place out.
The tram tour was excellent...great tour guide, great info. I took both the highlights tour and WWII tour (Bldg 3)...all superb. A must visit for anyone with interest in aviation!
We are from San Diego and both spent our careers in aerospace so we were intrigued by the museum and seeing all the aircraft on display, especially the boneyard tour. We arrived at 10 minutes before 9 and there was already a line to get in. We had wanted to take the 10 a.m. boneyard tour, but by the time we reached the ticket office, it was sold out so we bought tickets for the 11:30 tour. That worked out better because we had a good 2 1/2 hours to tour the hangers and wander around the field where hundreds of aircraft are parked. Good signage so you knew the history of whatever was on display and the volunteer staff were fabulous. Very friendly, knowledgeable. They greeted visitors as they entered the hanger and made themselves available to answer any questions we had. I highly recommend spending time at this museum.
