The Columbus Museum is a hidden treasure in Columbus and valley area; there is a lot to see and do at the museum. Every third Thursday of the month from 6-8 PM there is live entertainment focused around art within the museum with free food, they have art classes for people to take, they also have American Art History classes. I could go on and on about the events at the museum but you can see for yourself by going to: www.columbusmuseum.com. The museum also has programs designed for children of all ages and when you visit you have to see the Olmsted Garden; oh, don't miss the last concert in the Garden Concert Series, on October 2, from 5:30 - 8:00 PM got to website for details. Lastly, while you are at the museum go see Valley Painters, the (NEW) Leaving Mississippi exhibitions and pick-up a copy of The Muse (the museum's quarterly magazine). The Columbus Museum is; Always Changing and Always Free!
I was very hesitant at first and I didn't expect much from a small local museum. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the artwork and they have some nice traveling shows. The kids area in the basement is on the smaller side, but the kids still have fun dressing up or drawing. If there are too many kids in there though it can get cramped pretty quickly.
Enjoyed learning about the local area. The children's area needs sprucing up. The exhibits upstairs were not kid friendly so we didn't see artwork. Overall, a decent museum.
I feel that many people think Columbus does not have much to offer in the area of enjoyment and museums, but this was exceptionally above my expectations and I would definitely come back.
While waiting to see our son at Ft. Benning, we decided to spend some time at this museum, and we are so glad we did. First, it is FREE, but they do put out a container for donations. We donated about $5 per person in our group. The place is beautiful inside and well kept with many exhibits. It is really a museum for all ages. There is history of the Columbus area from the time of the Indians settlements to present day, and an art museum, too. I wish we had more time to see the art displays--maybe next time. I felt I really learned a lot about Columbus which prior to my visit, I knew nothing about. We watched a short film and walked at our own pace through the exhibit areas. The exhibits on the first floor are also easy for those in wheelchairs to see and there are elevators that will take you to the 2nd floor for the art exhibits. There is also a very nice gift shop. I am glad we went there.
This museum was suggested as a place to get an overview of Columbus and it is true! It has a nice, historic section that really gave a "Who are these people and how did they get here" perspective. We did not know much about Columbus other than Fort Benning, and enjoyed learning about the Civil War history, the Native American information, etc.
