although the Poort is still the same the area around has changed considerable the new building are out of place but still a great place to visit.
The only surviving of 12. City gates - very photographic! Nothing much else that we noticed in this area.
After reading about the gate on TA I am glad I got to see this landmark. A great photo opportunity of a bygone era.
The Amsterdamse Poort is the only remaining gate from the former citywalls. It stands somewhat lonely on a busy crossing to Amsterdam. You can easily overlook it. It is nice to walk by and take the Spaarnwouderstraat into town. You will get an impression on what Haarlem looked like in the old days, and is a less touristic part of Haarlem.
This is interesting because it's over 650 years old and is the only Haarlem city gate left, but if you're not interested in the history then it's rather underwhelming (especially if you have visited France's chateaus - in comparison to those, this is a small gate surrounded by aesthetically offensive modern buildings). In any case, if you're already within a few minutes' walk, then you might as well see it.
I love this every time I see it I know I'm close to my sister's house. In the Amsterdamse straat. Behind the gate a nice place to shop.
You must take a picture in the old gate of Haarlem. It´s a little ancient beauty, well preserved in its original design. There is not much to see around but it´s worth paying a visit and taking a picture.
Be sure to visit the Windmill Museum. I was fascinated. Couldn't believe how adaptable they are and their history. Great views of the area from the upper levels.
The fact it's visible and the history of the entrance into the city is fascinating. Makes a great picture for your collection!
It is worth a visit to take some holiday pictures whilst you are in the town as it isn't too far from the centre. It is a small attraction that will take a couple of minutes to look at but it is very beautiful.
The Amsterdamse Poort is shopping area near train station Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena, Ajax Football stadion and Heineken Music Hall. It is enclosed by mainly office buildings and the residential area of Bijlmer. The main brands of shops are present, like Hema, Albert Heijn and Blokker, together with a few small restaurants. Sometimes there is a day market. The Shopping Hall at the back contains more restaurants of interest. At night, after the shops are closed the area can become a bit desolate and it might be better to move on.
We visited on a Sunday afternoon. Not much open til 5 near by. But this was a very beautiful. Parking is nearby.
Unlike Leiden there isn't much to do close to the city gate, but as an landmark and historic object it is still worth visiting. It's nice for some nice holiday pictures and this gate is different from other Dutch city gates. It's for free, it will take you about 10 minutes from the Grote Markt, so if your in Haarlem anyway, why not take a look?.
