We visited here on an included tour from our Grand Circle trip -- our guide -- a local now, but from Wales originally -- was AWESOME. What insight into the history of these not-quite pirates. There were some really nice painting available for sale -- but one needed CASH --no credit cards accepted. Not many of us had 1000+ euros on hand nor could one get this amount from the ATM on one day. Too bad!

I had been looking forward to seeing this house because of its history and repetoire in the area but thought the person in the shop quite rude, I knew that the tour it was mainly in French and there was English reading scripture but when we asked to join the tour he said it would be pointless as our French wasn't strong enough. Please don't let me put you off though because it does seem like it could be brilliant.

On a recent visit in Saint-Malo we toured this Corsair's house. The owner of the house was a fountain of information about the history of the corsair's as well as the history of Sainte-Malo. It seems the sailors of Sainte-Malo were very clever and ambitious because when there was more fish than they could sell they decided instead to raid British boats for the King of France. This was a form of legalized piracy! They would steal the ship and cargo for cash and then trade the crew for Frenchmen in English jails. This worked well until the English wised-up and began sailing in groups of ships. The corsairs then decided to trade all their surplus fish for silver in Peru. They became quite wealthy doing this until there was more silver in Sainte-Malo than buyers. So what do they do? They take the silver to china and India to trade for silk and spices. They were very resourceful. This was just one of the many interesting stories that we heard along with a tour of the corsair's house. All in all an interesting and fun visit.

After reading the reviews on this site, we decided to scout out the Corsaire's home. It is part of a hotel and thus, not really obvious. We actually went in looking for directions! The place looks lovely and the owner is debonaire. However, be aware that the schedule is very rigid - one visit a day, in the middle of the afternoon. There is a lot of that in St Malo so pick your places as you will probably only be able to see one a day. While the Corsaire's house is interesting, it is pricy for what you get as the visit only includes a couple of rooms. Like all guided tours, much depends on the tour guide. The owner is a nice man, but we believe the quality of the tour depends on how well he interacts with the audience, and what else he has to do on any given day.We recommend you go to the place earlier int he day and ask questions to get a feel for the offering and whether the owner seems to connect well with you. Also be ready to part with what can seem like a bit of money for a short tour.
