This was a charming little castle and well worth the visit. My brother and I visited in January and it was a free admission (not sure if it's that way year round). It's not a large castle by any stretch, but it's certainly a fun, scenic visit-- and a great way to cross back into town if you detoured out to the lovely Bellecroix gardens

Most impressive fortifications and port of entry into the medieval town. The towers and walls are well preserved and the location near the Seille awards Porte des Allemands a most romantic appearance. Not to be missed on a visit to Metz although it is slightly off the beaten path but easily accesssible on foot.

situated about 10 minutes by foot from the cathedral, the Porte des Allemands is best to enjoy during the morning.Make sure you also check out the former ramparts nearby.

With its interesting history, the porte des allemands was one of the highlights of our stroll through Metz. Very impressive with its different towers, its inner and outer gate and situated right above the Seille river.

We visited in May, 2014 and it was still closed for renovations but even without going in I thought it was an interesting visit. I think I was expecting something a little bigger but was still pretty cool to look at and easy to photograph. Its very close to the downtown area and you can easily walk to some of the other landmarks in Metz from here. We parked a few blocks up, walked to the port des allemands and then walked along the river and could get a feel for how the remaining fortifications tied into the bridge. I would recommend checking it out if you are in Metz

Of course we disliked not being able to go inside. Thus the average rating. Now for the reason I think this is a must see and we would return again even knowing that it's currently closed: Architecturally interesting monument from one of the many periods of German control. Part of a series of ramparts and old fortifications along the river that were important to the defense of the town in earlier eras - be sure to walk part or all of the circuit north along the river from this structure. Besides, the neighborhood between the old town and the Porte des Allemands was interesting in itself - seedier, more local and lived in, and probably a bit more exciting (we walked through early sunday morning so cannot say for certain) than some of the other tourist routes. Go see it, even it's not open yet.

It will be good to see again when they are finished with the restauration works. It's off the beaten path in this city and not well sign posted, but we found our way through the less-than upper class area. Looked to be some decent places to eat there, too!

We made a completely spontaneous trip to Metz one weekend because we saw there was cheap train fare and we had never been there before. We loved our time here and it was a wonderful city just to walk around in. The Porte des Allemands is a great example of free, picturesque spots throughout Metz. We didn't have an itinerary at all and managed to find a great hotel and wonderful food by just walking around. Great weekend trip for a couple of nights.

Very cool... a must see if you visit Metz! We really enjoyed seeing the history of Metz. Great spot for photos!

In just one day, doing all what we've done was hard, but really appagant. Entering here is like to be back in the MiddleAges, you can see the river from the above and... it's free!!!

I can't exactly explain why I liked this site as much as I did. Since Metz was an enormous fortress-city, it was like that last piece of the puzzle for my imagination to envision the city during Mideval times. If you visit the Porte des Allemands, make sure you walk north and go on top of the ramparts. From here you can follow a path that traces the outer wall and see some of the destruction from some of the many wars in Metz. It's also extremely quite and peaceful on the trail.

This structure, a rebuilding of the ancient gate of the city is fun to visit and very photogenic. Don't miss.

Most gates are small this one crosses the river it is really amazing.
