This experience was different than any other tasting I've done before. The host, Andrej was wonderful and even did the tasting with us. It felt like we were at a friends house. It was interesting to hear about Slovenia from a local. He served us a delicious cheese plate as well as a meat platter! Very reasonably priced - 5-8 euros a bottle. We ended up buying a case! As other reviewers have commented, we thought this would be a 30 minute stop at most but we spent three hours in the wine room and could have spent far more time there. If you go, I would recommend calling ahead if you can and have dinner there! While we were there, Andrej was prepping dinner for a local family that came.
I was recommended to visit Vinogradi Horvat by the staff at the old vine in Maribor. It is within walking distance from town if you are keen and fit (~3km walk), or otherwise it would be a cheap cab ride.If I'm honest I was just expecting a quick wine tasting to pass some time one afternoon during my relaxed stay in Maribor. As it turned out I stayed for around 3 hours, testing several quality wines with the awesome host Damijan (I hope I spelled that correctly!) talking about wine, Slovenia, food, football and everything in between. As a solo traveller it was a great experience to talk with a local host and learn some history about the wines and the region. I also didn't expect the cheese platter and the bowl of pumpkin soup that I was served during the tasting!Overall I had a great time and would highly recommend any travellers visit Horvat winery and experience their hospitality. I bought half a dozen bottles to bring home to Australia (one of which unfortunately broke in the plane flight home), and will be sharing the experience and wine with some friends soon. Thanks again! Hvala!
Best wine in region and very kind people!I hope that one day we will take a seat outside, maybe in vineyard and have a drink a glass of wine!Highly recommended!
We had an absolutely brilliant time at Horvat. It was by far the highlight of our (short) stay in Maribor. The hosts were incredibly interesting, amusing and friendly, as well as being extraordinarily passionate about wine. We were welcomed in like friends and even as complete novices had a fantastic time learning about the wine process and the wines produced by them in Maribor. We sat chatting for 5 hours!! Would 100% recommend to anybody in Maribor regardless of how interested you are/how much you know about wine.
We visited Horvat winery because we had heard so many good things about it and they really lived up to the expectations! The hosts made us feel at home and taught us a lot about both winetasting and winemaking. The place felt genuine and we got to taste homemade salami and local produced cheese which were really nice. A visit to Horvat winery was definitely the highlight of our stay in Maribor!
At Horvat you can participate in a great wine tasting, for a very low price. The family that runs the place make the wines with passion, and you will feel it in their presentation. They treat you like you are a guest in their home. Very hospitable. We ended up staying for nearly 6 hours talking to the hosts. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Maribor!
When you stay in maribor and you're at least a little bit intressted in wine, this is the perfect place. Personally i don't drink much wine, but i loved this wine tasting.... Not exeggerated. For only 10 euro's we tasted about 8 wines (but if we wanted to we could taste some more) and we got a very Nice lunch and a tour true the wine cellar and they showed us the production proces. More important than that, was the fact that the wine production is a familiy business. And when you join them fort the wine tasting, they let you feel like you're part of it too. That is because they are giving wine tastings not to get much money but because they realy like doing it. The husband of the owner speaks very gold english and he loves to tell you about wine, in as much depth as you personnally like. The woman will pour in most of the wine and she speaks some german. A good thing to Note is that the wines you taste are almost all white wines, we also tasted one rosé wine. At the end you will get the option to buy some wine. The prices are realy good for the quality of wine you're getting. Most prices are between 8 and 12 euro per bottle. My friends and i, we all bouht a bottle for our parents, to let them taste what we tasted.
