a huge hangout place, lots of people and activity and amazing statue in the middle. if you want to see the city you probably going to pass through it lots of times, so take few pictures and enjoy the place
Dobo square was renovated last summer, so it looks quite nice. However there is not much to do here. Take a few pictures, then cross the creek on your way to the Castle. This is your best bet.
Lovely square. Be brilliant in Summer when works have finished with plenty of seating in front of the church. Plenty of restaurants and bars around the perimeter to get food and refreshments.
the square got a new face during 2014, but many of us cannot understand the reason. It was nice at all. Also many Eger people are missing the old sculpture: a big fight against turkish and hungarian warriors
I am not an architect, but the composition of Franciscan Church with the Archbishop's Palace and the monumental statue of Stefan Dobo, overlooking the castle belongs to the rare sight. Cup of red Bikavér and dupla Fekete on it will make you contented being. You have to try it!
In September 2014 Dobo Square was reconstructed and renewed. The lights of the surrounding buildings shine on the modern pavement, benches of the square. The glowing lights of the new fountain makes the visit worth in the evening.
Picturesque square in the center of Eger. Great to sit down and read about the history of the town, the castle and the setting of the town before you begin to explore.
i have visited Eger for several times, over 25 years - nothing has changed, always reconstructing, but looks like it will never be finished
We visited in July and this area is all ripped up. Not much to see here until the construction is completed.
The square is currently under construction. We could"nt visit it, hopfully next year it will be ready for tourist and local inhabitanst as well.
Eger, Hungary. Major construction is currently underway in Dobo Square. Be advised that Eger received a multi million Euro grant from the EU and is using the money to totally redo Dobo Square. As of the end of March the square and several streets around it were completed demolished and you could not even walk through or around the square. The detour was 1/4 mile just to get from one side of Dobo Square to the other. One guide indicated that the project would take another year to complete. If Dobo Square factors into your travel plans, strongly advise checking with the TI prior to any visit to Eger in 2014.
Sadly when we were there the square was closed and it was under construction. At least we could see on the information posters how will it look like if they finish the construction works.
I was dunb founded that the old town area here was so beautiful, and so little is really published about it. I ate at a restaurant near here and had some of the best croquets and beef tips on the earth.
nice cozy space was a few years ago. Now somewhat neglected, poor ...The nearby wine cellars are able to improve the feeling .. :-)
The view on the castle is brilliant from here, but the square itself seemed a bit run down. The damaged concrete stepping stones are quite ugly, and I think these are from the socialist era, and haven't been replaced since then. I definitely not recommend Eger for shopping, since there's no such a shopping street as Vaci street in Budapest. Most of the stores are outdated boutiques, or souvenir shops selling some stuff for tourists, and nationalist t-shirts for locals. Luckily Eger has many good cafés and restaurants, and they are always full. The run down parking lot and the concrete department store with cheap asian clothing behind the square is simply to avoid. The small creek could be nice, but in its concrete bed , full of garbage, it was actually disappointing.
