This is a gorgeous crater filled by implosion creating a microclime and a wetlands with rare and unusual flora, not found elsewhere on the island nor in the world. We visited on the way to Orongo which lies on the north wall. The west wall is eroded giving a view of the Pacific. Our guide was local and had walked and swam across he said. Of great interest to me given my work was that a drug called Rapamycin (from Rapa Nui) was discovered from a fungus that grows only there. This is a very valuable drug in immunosuppression preserving transplanted organs. Trekking down into the crater is not allowed, but great views from the top
You wont find this cave on your own. But with an experienced guide, its an epic adventure. The Cave is on the cliffs, with frigate birds flying below. Its a small cave with carvings of wales and men. It was one of my favorite parts of the island. No one goes there so you feel like you have the entire island to yourself.
Easter Island is the one of the famous island that is made from volcanoes offering picturesque views and it is the USP of this island. Poike is one of the main and extinct volcanoes in Easter Island that attracts millions of tourist from all around the world. The peak of this island is the second highest peak in Chile after Terevaka. You will feel like you are entering in the lap of nature as it is so serene and beautiful that I am not able to define in words. In fact, it is not justice to define it in words. You can also climb the volcano as it is just 400 meters and it is easy to climb. On the side of this volcano you will find nice petroglyphs, which is worth seeing. At the top of the volcano you will see several cones full of trees and wonderful view of the island. Believe me, you can’t miss the views of this volcano.
Easter Island is made up of volcanoes. This one is very austere and I climbed up to the top crater. Great view, though I felt a bit precarious on top. Try not to go on a windy day.
Poike Volcano was the first of the three volcanoes that make up Easter Island to poke its head out of the ocean. From the peak you can clearly see the 15 Moai, the Moai quarry (Rano Raraku) and the Poike ditch. The ditch is said to be the point where the "long ears" were killed off and thrown into their own fire by the rival "short ears." But for my money the Cave of the Virgins is the high light. You cannot drive back into the Poike peninsula, so we road horses, and you cannot find the cave unless you know where it is. You climb down the face of a cliff overlooking the sea to enter the cave -- which is rather small. The cave was where young girls stayed after their first period. They stayed there several months to lighten their skin (and therefore make them more beautiful), and were married off to aristocratic husbands afterwards. I hired Marc Shields, Green Island Tours, for my guide based on the reviews here on trip advisor -- this was no mistake. Marc was excellent. He was flexible, took me where I wanted to go, and told me what I wanted to know. His English was native quality, which is hardly surprising since he is a Kiwi (New Zealander), married to a local Rapa Nui girl. I cannot recommend him too much.
For Poike we hired Mark Shields (greenislandtours.com). He was just GREAT! BEST EVER. Couldn't imagine a better guide!!!! Saw the cave of the virgins, moai out of non-Rano Raraku material, and......the view of the island. WOW!! Equally interesting is that we talked a lot about life on Rapa Nui and some of the current issues. Really, really outstanding.
A vista, no entanto, é única!
