old castlemaine gaol

Offhand service by both members of staff. Limited choice on menu.Setting is interesting . Need to sort out their attitude to customers if they are to attract customers. Will not be returning.

We were driving through Castlemaine this morning and followed the signs to the gaol. We were delighted to arrive 15 minutes before the daily tour started. A young man took us on the tour explaining he wasn't the usual tour guide...he did a very good job---forgetting only a few dates. He had a vested interest in the gaol as it's owned by three local families. Families with a long local history---his being one of them. It's brilliant that the locals are involved in where the future of this piece of history is going. The tour showed us through thee gaol...explaining it's history ---grisly bits included. There is a cafe attached that has a great selection...and the fresh juice I had was really good. Everything was well priced----including the tour!

The tour was pretty great. The guides were really knowledgeable and easy to chat with. We didn't get any ghosties on film but we did have a great time. The history of this place is absolutely fascinating. Well worth the cash.

Unfortunately this building is now in private ownership, and is not yet open to the public. It is however well worth a visit. The architecture is outstanding, and there are fantastic photo opportunities while strolling the grounds. As an added bonus, there is a fantastic view across the Victorian era railway station from the main carpark. Well worth the visit.
