We enjoyed this winery. I bought a red, unfortunately the whites weren't my preference. I was impressed when my friend said his wine was corked and the winemaker discarded it immediately without question. It's a lovely open cellar door with an interesting history.
We were not educated by the owner on the wines being served for tasting . There was no passion for the product and did not seem to be organised in tastings for large groups(12 ) people .
If you are riding your bike from Beechworth along the Rail Trail you will come across this pleasant winery. Stop here because there won't be another one. Can't carry the wine you bought after sampling? They will deliver to your door (in our case our caravan at Lake Sambal).
Amazing range of fascinating wines. The combination of terroir and biodynamics is irresistible. It is one of the few wineries with an open cellar door and is well worth the visit as my cellar can attest!
It really is hard to convey how good the wines are and how passionate the wine makers are - so please go and experience it. We have been visiting for about 15 years and we are hooked. The wines are finely crafted, organic and only released when ready. There is a good range of reds and whites but don't leave with out tasting the sherry and the Gold.
When you drive around the dusty, curved, fruit tree and vine-lined road up to the Pennyweight farmhouse, you get a distinct sense that the owners don't care for the commercial. It feels like a farm with vineyards, but one that is clearly cared for and well-run. The grapes are hand-picked and the wines are biodynamic, but I was surprised by how complex and flavoursome they were. As such I proudly walked away with a 2009 Cabernet Sauvingnon, Franc and Merlot blend; a raspberry and chocolate-rich 2009 Durif and a beautiful dessert wine - Pennyweight Gold - rich with flavours of aged fruit cake. There were many more varieties to try, guided by a very friendly a genuine owner. I really recommend you visit Pennyweight after my experience.
pennyweight is fabulous. great reds and port. special memories of our engagement!
Always on our stop off list when travelling through Beechworth
Cold Sunday morning but a warm welcome and an introduction to some different varieties inc Gamay and Gold as well as a magnificent Pinot Noir . Well worth the stop and only a short drive off the main drag .
We really enjoyed visiting Pennyweight. It is so close to Beechworth but feels like you are a million miles away. Surrounded by Aussie gum trees - it is so peaceful. The team were really friendly, we especially enjoyed the sherries.
Organic, biodynamic and very very tasty! Pennyweight gold was served to us us part of Gigi's degustation. We went to buy some and ended up with much more. Worth a visit.
I love pennyweight. The wines are interesting and great value for money. The buildings are full of personality and the garden is so pretty. It is a lovely peaceful location too. The staff are friendly, approachable and helpful.
We first tried a glass of Pennyweight Gold - completely lives up to its name - when we stayed at Lindenwarrah Estate in Milawa. After relishing every drop of the sweet Gold at Lindenwarrah, we had to stop in at Pennyweight on our way home. On the main road through Beechworth keep an eye out for the signs to Pennyweight, then its a short way down the track to the homestead and tasting room. Pennyweight descends from the famous Morris of Rutherglen and they make a full range of varietals from the produce of their Beechworth and Rutherglen vineyards. We favour their stickys - particularly Pennyweight Gold and Ruby Red - but all the wine we tried was good.
