Thank you GreenPlanetTraveller, it is always wonderful to have a good night out with such a lovely family. I love to be able to share what I have observed and learnt and such an enquiring audience makes it doubly rewarding for me.
Thanks Patrick for your positive comments. You'll have to bring out the kids next time. Never too early to start corrupting them in the way of nature enthusiasts.
Celine, I hope you did not feel that I was going to give you a test at the end of the tour.
There was a bit of luck associated with this night but it gave rise to many wonderful night's of Grass Owl spotting for a couple of months. I really enjoyed your initial skepticism of the ID and then the joy that was so evident once you were convinced.
Barbara, which such effusive praise people will wonder if my mother did not write this. I enjoyed your company and wish you all the best with your beaver and Little Ringed Plover work. I'll send you an email but just to let you know here too, I saw my first Little Ringed Plover in Australia last week!!!!Many thanks for the review.
We were told at our hotel that it was unlikely that Alan was available on short notice. Nonetheless, they helped us call him, and we were lucky that he had time the next day. We went on a tour from early afternoon till after dark, and learned and saw so much, all in the company of a humorous, generous, delightful guide. My wife was thrilled that she finally had someone who could identify all the birds we were seeing, and help us spot many we had missed. Even at "standard" attractions like the Curtain Fig (well worth seeing!), Alan made the visit much better by explaining how the fig had started, what happened next, and what else was in the area. Then we went to see platypuses, to a bird blind, and (after dinner) into the forest at night to spot a glider and lemuroid possums. It was wonderful to see so much, and to learn so much more about them than we could have on our own. Just don't wait till the last minute like we did--book ahead so you know you'll get the chance to spend time with Alan on his home patch, and to get to see why he loves it.
Alan is a very knowledgeable guide on all subjects of natural history. I learned so much about the wildlife and geological history of this unique area and it exceeded all expectations. It is a long day so take a packed lunch and it can be extended to include an evening tour. The Atherton Tablelands are full of amazing and unique wildlife and his first hand knowledge made it a memorable experience. It is well worth going to.
We had tried to book Alan for a day or two of birding but his schedule was full when we were there. Instead, he took the time to give us a series of suggested places to go, birds to look for, and such. This led us to places we would have not thought of or had even heard of. None were in the "Birdfinding" books we had. We found most of the birds he mentioned, a few that weren't and saw places entirely new to us. Made for a very enjoyable two days. The next time we visit we hope our schedules will coincide.
We spent a morning birding with Alan as our Guide on the Atherton Tablelands followed by a nocturnal tour in the evening. It was a very productive morning. Alan knows his birds extremely well and knows where to find them. His local knowledge is invaluable. He was able to take us to locations of some very special birds which we would not have seen by ourselves.A very knowledgeable and pleasant guide. Thoroughly recommended.
Un grand merci Hélène. Vous êtes très aimable.“Il parle même aux oiseaux !” I’ve been known to talk to myself too but often get a more intelligent response from the birds ;-)
