We didn't originally plan to stop here, but I sure am glad we did!The museum is small, but full of very interesting information and artifacts relating to the early Chinese settlers. The temple was beautiful and mostly original which was amazing. Our guide Graham was very knowledgeable and a very pleasant chap who was easy to talk to. He is obviously very proud of how well the temple is maintained, as well he should be.I learned a lot about a different side to early Australia on our visit and would definitely recommend this experience to others.
As Cairns residents we often travel to Atherton and felt very remiss that we hadn't visited the Chinese Temple until recently. Initially we felt that the admission fee was a little steep for what seemed to be on offer, but after we'd been through the small but informative interactive museum display, followed by the guided tour of the temple, we were very impressed. Apparently a number of archaeologists and historians have brought together stories of the Chinese community that once lived there and we were surprised that despite the huge contribution these folk had made, they were treated very poorly - almost as second class citizens. Hats off to the volunteers who obviously love sharing their knowledge of this era and here's hoping that this great little piece of history continues to attract the funding and numbers of visitors necessary to ensure its continued success !
A small museum with a lot of information about the early Chinese presence in Atherton. We had a tour of the temple and outbuildings with a guide whose knowledge made the experience very good. Well worth a visit
My wife and I just visited this wonderfully informative place. The staff are friendly and the displays very professionally done. We had a tour guide that was great with his knowledge and made the experience well worth it. If you love history an even to be informed about the area this is a must.
The museum is small but has a lot of information on the main families in Atherton that helped build the Chinese community here. The temple itself is made of wood and tin (which apparently is quite unique) and survived a few cyclones in this area. Gabe took us through the temple and was a great hose and very knowledgable. Very interesting history.A pleasant suprise in our drive through Atherton.
