We were there just after having some rain. The waterfall was running well. We walked around through the rainforest to the lookout directly opposite the falls. The view here is great. There is a track that goes to the base of the falls if you are feeling energetic and want a swim in the plunge pool. There is also a walk to the top of the falls which has a lookout. There are also pools to have a swim at the top part of the stream. There is a picnic area and a few bring your own wood bbqs. There is also a nice café which operates on a weekend. Overall a great place for a Sunday drive.
A long and winding dirt (partial) road in steadily increasing rain ended in a carpark with a charming little café and a short stroll to a viewing deck which provided a spectacular view of the torrent of water cascading 200 metres to the abyss below. The option of walking 641 steps to the bottom and back again would have bee "jumped at" but was not possible due to the heavy rain. A must see.
The drive to the falls was often on unsurfaced, winding and pothole-ridden roads. However, the falls are well-worth seeing.
the road up to elands is pretty rad. groomed dirt most of the way. carpark is sweet too as there are fire places every few metres. you can go there at night and start a camp fire. there are volunteers that tidy the place up and the waterfall is pretty wicked too!
GETTING THERE...It is such a long round trip if you are coming from the Coast (ie Forster) direction - approx 2 hours each way. If you are in Taree area already it is certainly less painful. Approx 1.2 hrs.Wingham is the last stop for sustenance so stock up there if you have not already packed a lunch. Otherwise there is a little Kiosk at the top of the falls that sells pastries and cold drinks. You will need refreshments at the end of the walk!As the other posts rightly pointed out, the roads are windy, old country roads and in some sections they are in signigicant disrepair. There is a 15min section of unsealed corrugated road up over the mountain before you hit Elan. It is easily traversed in any vehicle. Just take it carefully in the windy sections as locals flog it around corners. THE WALK, THE FALLS...We visited on a mild sunny Oct morning and wore a tshirt and shorts and were comfortable. The path down to the falls is constructed planks and steps so its not muddy like dirt trails. But, if it has been raining they would certainly get a little slippery so definately wear comfortable shoes with good grip/tread.At the base of the falls there is a misty spray that can be far and wide with the breeze and if you like to do a little rock scrambling they can get mighty slippery in spots. The water at the base of the falls is still very chilly so I wouldnt expect to be able to swim for some time yet. But when it warms up take a towel and some lunch to chillout down at the base of the falls. Your calves will thank you :-)It took us about 10-15 minutes to get down to the bottom of the falls and about 25-30 minutes to get back to the top. Although we did stop and take a few pics on the way back up. (I would estimate us of moderate fitness if that helps)I think young kids (<10) or people with knee issues would struggle with the return leg of the walk. The view from the mouth of the falls is spectacular enough to hang out up top happily though.
200m fall with plenty of water in October. We chose the most difficult walk all the way down to the bottom of the fall and back up. 641 steps each way...and definitely worth the effort. Don't miss out on this one. unsealed roads to get there but they were really good with our standard family 2WD car.
The actual falls are beautiful but the road to get there is a dirt one, very steep & windy. Once you do get to the falls there are a few options for walks - easy, intermediate & hard. Pack swimmers if plan on going to the base as you will definitely want to jump in the water.
Grew up in this area, and still go up there now to visit. The drive is an adventure in itself on the rough dirt road, and the view is incredible. If you have the time, you should totally take the 641 step hike to the bottom of the waterfalls as well! Be warned - there's some serious cardiovascular exercise involved.
Lovely site. One of the highest falls in the southern hemisphere. Well worth the trip. Must be careful if you hike to the bottom of the falls as the rocks get very slippery
The power of these Falls is amazing. So enjoyed the treck up to the Knob. Bit of a goat track, adults would be fine but children would need to be well supervised. A good and gentle walk, I'm asthmatic and 60 odd and did it fine . The kiosk is marvelous especially Amanda's home made pies.
If you love nature then see these falls. I was more impressed by the shops handmade pasties! It's a bit of a drive to get there.
beautiful waterfall, maybe not as impressive as some others in the area but beautiful in it's own right. We took a picinic down to the bottom of the waterfall. The sign says 45 minutes to walk back up again but we did it in 15 so don't be fooled.
Lovely falls with a terrific viewing platform and easy access to the top of the falls. Can get to the base but a lot of steps to go down! Great picnic area to stay a while and have lunch. If you don't want to pack your own then you can get some great coffee and lovely homemade treats at the falls Kiosk (open weekends and school holidays) or in the town of Elands at the local co-op run shop. Recommend you see them if are visiting this beautiful region.
Always love the view, looking straight down into the valley, and the fresh food from the kiosk located there
A great walk down the steps, view the water fall from the viewing platform then a great hike back up to the top. Loved the steps, great for a fit feeling when you time yourself.
