A must see for any one who has the time to spend viewing and walking through this collection of everything from the past. Everyone will find something that has been in their past and bring memories flooding back. *****:-D
Make sure that you leave plenty of time for this place. You will either love it or hate it. There is just so much to see. Walk around once with out stopping and just look, then start back again and this time do it slower and hopefully you wont miss the many treasures amongst the junk!!
The Cowra Fun Museum is not fun - especially if you love museums and the preservation of artifacts and history. Most of this museum is in sheds and under awnings leaving the artifacts exposed to moisture, heat, sun, & wind. As numerous number of items on display are labeled with magic marker directly on the artifacts. Antique flags nearly disintegrated from exposure hang sadly above the "rooms" hung with paperclips and fish hooks. There were lots of neat and interesting items, but they are displayed like a hoarder keeps things in a barn. The "curator" if you can call him that, was only educated on about half of the stuff laying around and seemed more interested in chatting and having coffee than allowing us to walk freely to experience the museum. Walk spaces are narrow & things fall off of their perches easily - this place is not handicap accessible. I love museums & I love Australia, but you should just pass this one by when visiting Cowra. If you also love the preservation of antiquities - you will just be angered by the organizations blatant disregard for common preservation practices and it is cold if you go in the winter, as there are no real walls around a bunch of the display areas.
This is a seriously effed up museum, in a good way! What a crazy, eclectic collection of paraphernalia. Lots of nostalgia and Aussie stuff and weird stuff. The guy at the desk had no teeth and was wearing a Schutzstaffel jacket. Not trying to suggest he was a Nazi, but it certainly didn't convince us that he wasn't. There is an old train carriage full of mannequins that has to be seen to be believed - weird and awesome. Overall this is definitely worth a stop on your way to or from Cowra!
There is heaps to see here. We brought my Dad who is in his 80's and he just loved it. Lots of trains and war memorabilia. It was $15 for an adult and $10 for a pensioner.
This place has so much history and artefacts it is hard to where to start. During the school holidays it would not hurt to have someone on site. The trust system works well with $150 shoved under the mat in the well entrance room. What a pity the rest of the place has no lights on to see what you were looking at! The cowra pow room was so dark it was dangerous. I understand the electricity would be expensive, I suggestyouinvest in sensor lights if you are going to charge people to view what must be a lifetime ofcollecting
We were told of this museum by the locals of Cowra, we stopped off on the way home and wow this place is full of history, it has history from so far back, I walked into the army camp and thought this is amazing, it must have taken so long collecting all this history and setting it out, they even had an old Holden car my dad had when I was young, this place not only took me up memory lane but showed me that the people cared enough to keep all this history and put it where people can go to see it all, please keep this place going because without our past who are we, I have never seen so much history in one place, if you are near Cowra you must go to see this place.
Saw the Fun Museum listed but thinking it might be just for kids i was wrong, this fascinating museum has lots to see and do lots of history and many things that bring back memories of my childhood spent a lot of the day there, there is a fee to entre but with no one at the counter you simply place the money on the counter, so trusting, it is good to see after the more sombre areas looking at war
In 1992 I visited the museum and found it quaint. I revisited it last week whilst on a trip to the Bathurst races. It has grown expotentially and now is absolutely mind blowing. Don't go there and expect something world class like the Imperial War Museum, but be prepared to be amazed at how a guy can collect so much memorabliia of Australian history. I spent 1 1/2 hours there and only by being called upon by my tour party called me away. For guys- there is something of everything to interest all people. I will be back on my own to really enjoy it and savour the uniqueness of this out of the way and seriously undersold museum. It is a mixture of sand and concrete floors and most paths are wide enough for most types of transport. The only places not available will be inside the railway carriages. I am still blown away by the size and diversity of the collections displayed here.
