Very serene and beautiful. Enjoyed going there with friends and taking pictures. Nice walk around the beach.
As a family we have been going to this beach for 16 years. My son is now grown and my husband and myself still go to get away from the humidity in Hamilton,Very clean beach once you pass the front entrance. Still wish the hours were extended.Used to meet my brother on his boat with his friends, and make a day of it, always turned outto be alot of fun.Haven't been in 2014 yet, algea scared me away, hope it leaves soon..........
I read the reviews posted prior to going to this beach, and was apprehensive. Thank goodness we decided to go- had such a great time! Yes, as previous reviewers have stated, once you get past the entrance, the smell will go away. I highly recommend paying the $10 for parking anywhere on the beach- just be careful how far you go, because the sand is soft, and unfortunately we had witnessed some cars get stuck today :( However other than that, the water is clear, some algae, but only in some areas. Warm water, great view, lots of room to barbecue, play games, water games/ sports and much more- awesome again I say! Only thing is they close at 6 pm- other than that though, will definitely be visiting many more times this summer! Wonderful beach :)
We have been going to Nickel Beach for years. Once you get past the funky algae and SMELL near the entrance, it is the widest and cleanest beach along the southern Ontario shoreline. The other thing that's nice are the huge dunes behind the beach. It makes you feel like you're at the ocean, and going into them is kind of a cool break from being out in the sun. My kids always loved to run and play back there, until 3 years ago when my son and nephew caught raging poison ivy!!So, enjoy the beautiful clean sand (no rocks!!!), the shallow water and the great view, but stay out of the dunes!!
Went there on Saturday June 28, 2014, beach was dirty, which didn't mind much, but the worst was the dead fish floating and the smell that came with it around 3 pm, unbelievable disgusting, we know where not to go next time.
Went on a Saturday, beach was clean, had a great time, awesome beach. Would be amazing if it had a bar and restaurant but a place anyone should visit regardless at leat once.
You can park outside the gate if you don't mind walking or don't need to bring your car in as it is $10 to drive in & you can drive down the beach to park wherever you wish. The area by the entrance had quite an odour from seaweed but further to the east it was much nicer. Lots of sand & the water is shallow out a ways. There is a washroom building on the beach.
This is a great beach, and as a member of the City of Port Colborne. I cannot understand why it closes at 6.p.m. The City needs to fix this. The city leases the beach from Inco. It is a tourist draw for tourists and locals alike. After 6 the gate is locked, You can walk on but I would not as there is a not friendly sign that say private property trespassers will be prosecuted.
Once you manage to find your way in, Port Colborne's Nickel Beach will astound you! Nestled on a wonderful bay on Lake Erie's south shore, Nickel Beach will remind you of some of the largest and most expansive ocean beaches around the world. It is truly one of Canada's most secret treasures! For anyone looking to enjoy the classic beach experience, nothing can compare to Nickel Beach!
In season, Nickel Beach allows you to drive your vehicles right onto the beach, which I normally wouldn't like, but it's fantastic when we need to go with my elderly friend who has trouble walking. This is the only beach I've found where she can get out of the car and easily manage to walk the few feet to the water....and once in, she swims like a fish and has a wonderful outing. Without Nickel Beach she couldn't go swimming in Lake Erie anymore. I bring her from the north end of St. Catharines to your warm Lake Erie waters with your clean accessible beach. I don't know if the washroom is technically accessible per se...I think there is a step. Off-season you can't drive up to the beach because the access is blocked, but you can park outside in the parkinglot and walk in for free.
One of the nicest beaches I have ever been to. Sand is clean. Water is clean. Kids love it. Great price for a carload for the day.
Loved going here as a kid, as a teen, and now love hanging out with friends and family. How great to have this beach right in our backyard! Can't beat the sandy shores and awesome surf. This summer weather is making me crave a day at Nickel Beach!
i lives in port 32 years and go back every yr cant wait to visit nickel beach again such good memories!!!!! diannabowensimpson
I left Port Colborne many years ago but have very fond memories of Nickel Beach. I learned to swim on the shores of Lake Erie and remember the warm clear beaches. This past summer I had the occasion to visit Port once again and spent a very pleasant afternoon at my old stomping grounds. Having not visited in many years I was suprised at the changes at the beach. First being you had to pay to enter. Well now you can drive your car onto the beach and not hike in so I suppose the fee is justified. The beach was populated with both families and young adults. I liked that we could stake out an area and unload near the car. This was appreciated at the end of the afternoon no need for long haul out. The beach is well kept. No debris in site. The patrol did a good job of ensuring that the frivolity was kept to a minimum. I would not hesitate to bring young children as I found it was family friendly. All in all a very lovely day.
Amazing Beach! My family and I wanted to go to a beach and not have to fly anywhere and let me tell you, this beach is a hidden gem. I highly, highly recommend it for anyone planning to get a little getaway to the beach and get our tan on. =)
