We didn't spend a huge amount of time there but what we saw was incredible...who would have thought they were buried under the road...
Stunning the sheer number of sphinxes laid out before you down the avenue in front of the temple. They will wow you also as can be seen when traveling around the city! Lit up at night, they are amazing! No cost and wonderful to be able to take photos.
Still being completed, but once it gets complete the ambitious project of Avenue of Sphinxes will be one grand monument in itself.
You can see this when you go to the Luxor Temple, no need to pay separately to see it. And depending on where you are in Luxor, you can see this from different places in the town. It's so amazing, and easy to imagine what it would have originally looked like. Not much to dig into historically, just another very physical, immediate, bodily reminder of the magnitude of construction at this early date in human history.
The view from the streets, depending where you are is amazing and you can see so much. There was no need to get a ticket. Save the money and walk along until you find a beautiful spot to take pictures. A great sight! For free!
this is truely amazing-the avenue of sphinxes stretches from the temple of Luxor to the temple of Karnak and has only been excavated in the last few years-well worth a look
Absolutely stunning - when you think of the Nile and the Ancients - this is it, You can feel the history - no pyramid but I think this is better - your only limits are your imagination - get here early - miss the crowds and its a little cooler - go see it - you can't fail to be impressed. Not to much haste from the locals, limited walking to site.
Not an attraction as such but a wonderful walk between the two temples go to the square at the side of Luxor Temple and follow the avenue that has been uncovered during the last few years with still more to be uncovered. I walk this route everytime I go (currently 8) walk on the right handside of the avenue until you get to the new bridge some 500 m from Karnack Temple which you will see in the distance - then go to the left side past all the buildings on the left follow the road as far as it goes until you reach the first structure which has probably the best preserved carvings - just follow the boundary wall past the school and you come to the main entrance. Through the gates and into the visitors centre and suggest you study the wooden display model of the site - told it was donated by the Americans gives a great idea what you are about to see steady walk takes me around 40 mins from Luxor Temple - possibly 2 hours inside then taxi back don't pay more than 30 egyptian for the taxi irrespective of how many passengers or walk back alongside the Nile very pleasant around 30 mins back. ENJOY
Once excavation will be completed it will be an impressive site. For now removal of existing properties that were built over the site over so many years must be removed....accompanied by a lot of "kicking and screaming" by the inhabitants...
Most of the sphinxes are out of view and we were unable to walk along them. They looked like they were being excavated but cound not see any order to the dig.
We walked on this site at night and the view is stunning and well worth visiting. We visited it in conjuction to the nearby Temple of Luxor and it made for a wonderful evening, especially as our hotel was in easy walking distance
Absolutely magnificent connection between Luxor and Karnak temples. It is a restauration work in progress and quite a job. Many bases were empty, either because the sfinxes have been destroyed or taken away for restauration. Negotiations are still going on in order to excavate the remainder of the stretch. If they succeed, the Luxor-Karnak corridor should be able to attract tourists in the thousands as it shows the magnitude of the period's building scale.
The link between Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple...watch them and walk through them...Pharaohs really had a very great civilization.
I walked there a lot in the blazing sun but it didn't matter. The view of the avenue was too great for me.
There is something really magical about the Avenue of Sphinxes. It is awesome at night with an almost mystical feel to it and equally impressive in the day. It seems quite incredible that so many of the sphinxes have been hidden below buildings and are now being liberated. The avenue kept drawing me back to look at it again - just loved it!!
