This is one of our favorite places to go. We are fortunate to live only miles away. I take many pictures there, of not only the beaches, but of the many wild horses and deer that roam the island. The beaches are beautiful and go on for miles. It is nature is it's finest. It has gotten more and more popular because it is getting very crowed in Ocean City. They have made several more parking areas and bathroom, which were needed. Make sure you stop by the Visitor's Center. It was redone and it is lovely for children too. They have a movie about the Island and the horses . If you go in the summer, bring bug spray, as it is all natural. Many people camp there too.

I visited Assateague State Park with a group of friends and my boyfriend. All I knew about the park previously was that it was a sister to the more well-known Chincoteague Island. Not surprisingly, I loved this place! We started out in the visitor center, where we got to learn about some of the flora and fauna and history of the island. After that, we hit some of the hiking trails. They were very comfortable and easy for us beginner hikers, and the scenery was beautiful! It was really interesting to see the old highway, and walking on it helped ease a couple of our group who were having trouble walking in the sand for long periods of time. After hiking, we took our picnic lunch on the beach. It was a really beautiful place to visit, definitely something I would do often if I lived closer. My sole complaint was that we only saw two of the famous ponies, both on the drive in. But of course, that's not something that can be controlled, and it was really interesting learning about the ponies and how they help raise funds by auctioning off the right to name new foals! I'd recommend this park to pretty much anyone - it is kid-friendly, great for groups or couples, but would be just as fun solo. Just make sure you bring your camera!

Very peaceful place to visit. Ocean City is a few miles away for all the entertainment you could want. Frontier Town is just down the road. Plenty todo or not to do. Bike paths are all over the Park.

Our summer place is just a few miles away from Asateague Island National Seashore. We go all the time and never tire of it. We rent kayaks and stand up paddle boards and have a blast every time. Dog friendly, they come with us (call ahead to ensure they don't have a scheduled group that will use all the kayaks-http://www.mdcoastalbays.org/rentals). No pets allowed on the Virginia side, called Chincoteague. You can rent bikes too. We enjoy biking from the bay side to the ocean side and back. Bring a bird identification book, or use your mobile device. Bring your own food, water and beverages. Please DRIVE SLOW. Ponies have been hit by cars I think every year. Enjoy! Get out of the car to get the full experience. We have visited every month of the year.

If you want unspoiled beaches, the ability to drive on the beach, and wild horses, this is the place for you. It can get hot in the summer, and buggy, but if the wind is right, it is paradise. There are guarded beaches for those in need, but the real joy is driving your 4 wheel drive to your own spot ($$permit required and limited # allowed on the beach at a times - so go early.) Take a picnic, chairs, fishing poles, sunscreen, drinks, and make a day of it. For those interested, many use this park's bay side to launch their boards for kiting, kayaks, and if the surf is up, at the oceanside you can try that as well. Easter Sunday has sunrise services, and the park service has a list of other events throughout the summer. The visitor center is also great, especially for families. It is a gem.

Assateague is a nice place to visit for a few hours while you are staying in OC md. A great place to camp for a few days. The ponies roam about free. The beach is nice and you can walk to the bay.

then we walked around and seen tons of horses. The waves were crazy and we had a lot of fun. Went on a windy day so maybe that's why the bugs didn't bug us like other reviews I read. We want to go back like now. We could have stayed for days but just did the one day thinking it wouldn't be a full day at the beach.

Whether family with kids or a romantic weekend. This place is so relaxing. You can hike on some of the nature trails. Camp at one of the parks. If you have four wheel drive and a permit you can drive on the beach and even surf fish. On the bay side you can even walk into the bay and go claming with your feet.Spent most of my weekends here growing up. Never a dull moment.

I can't say enough good things about this spot. Even when it's packed in the summer, it's still really fun. They have a store and outdoor showers to rinse off.

This is a beautiful scenic park offering various trails to walk and view wild life with a great chance of seeing the famous wild horses. Also the beach here and the ocean views are some of the best in the Ocean City MD area. Have been coming for years off season and enjoy the solitude and ability to get some great exercise walking the trails and along the beach. Great photo taking opportunities all across the park. The visitor center about 2 miles from park entrance is well worth stopping at as well. Admission was $15 per car for a pass good for 1 week

There is nothing not to like about this place other than the lack of care for the ponies. That's what people come for, the opportunity to see wild ponies and enjoy the non developed beaches. My problem lies solely with the fact that injured or sick ponies are not cared for. On the Virginia side in Chincoteague, this is not the case. They will provide basic care for sick or injured ponies. The views are spectacular and the ponies really are cool. Kids will love this place.

My girlfriend and I visited Assateague with hopes of capturing good photo ops (horses, other animals, sunrises, beaches, landscapes etc) and the state park did not disappoint. We came across many horses in their natural habitat and found others hanging in campgrounds at night (we looked out of our tent and saw a pair laying next to our campsite). The beaches are great and not crowded at all, and the bathhouses were surprisingly very clean and well kept.We did reserve our camp spot rather late in the game and were "stuck" with the last spot in the loop - next to the bathhouse. While it was easy access, we did have to deal with the light at night and the flow of people going in and out. While it wasnt a continuous flow, it was definitely noticeable. That didn't however dampen the trip at all, and the campsite was definitely worth it.Also, bring lots of good bugspray. We initially brought eco-friendly sprays (we wanted to be environmentally conscious), but we learned that the mosquitoes were actually attracted to the all-natural stuff. Definitely go for the real heavy duty spray. It's worth it, especially if you explore some of the trails in the nearby National Park. Those trails are a quick walk from the state park campgrounds, and are definitely worth checking out for good photos and horse sightings.

We visited the park on 4 different occasions this past week. They have recently built a new marsh boardwalk that is handicapped accessible. it is 1/2 mi long and well worth your time to enjoy it. We enjoyed seeing the ponies, Whitetailed and Sitka deer as well as swans geese and ducks.
